Field Hockey Falls Late to RPI

Allen scores second goal of the season for Vassar

Troy, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey returned to action on the road on Wednesday evening for its second Liberty League contest of the season as the Brewers fell 3-1 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Vassar's record moves to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in conference action while the Engineers improve to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in Liberty League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Engineers had the first chance on goal about nine and a half minutes into the first quarter as sophomore Grace Wiley made a save on Abby Peterson. 
  • First year Zoe Robinson fired a shot on net with three minutes remaining in the quarter that was stopped by Tess Garchinsky followed by Wiley making another stop on Lauren McCarthy.
  • RPI recorded the lone shot on goal in the second quarter as Wiley registered her third save on a shot from Sophia Brown.
  • The Engineers broke the scoreless tie with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter on a goal from Dani Samuelson on an assist from Ria Patel.
  • Vassar evened the game just two minutes later as first year Mackenzie Allen scored her second goal of the season to tie the game at one after three quarters.
  • Wiley made back-to-back saves on Patel and Sophie Clancy early in the fourth period to keep the contest tied.
  • Brown put the Engineers back ahead with nine minutes left in the contest after knocking home a rebound off a Peterson shot that hit off the post.
  • RPI doubled its lead with just over five minutes remaining on a goal from Emily Dubord.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Allen recorded her second goal of the season while Robinson registered a shot on goal.
  • Junior Sofia Beseth fired two shots along with sophomore Anna Hazewindus and first year Ella Martin each added a shot.
  • Wiley made six saves in goal for Vassar.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Samuelson, Brown and Dubord each scored a goal for RPI and Patel recorded the lone assist on the night.
  • Garchinsky earned the win in goal and made one save.
GAME STATISTICS
  • RPI held a 15-6 advantage in shots along with a 9-2 lead in shots on goal.
  • The Engineers also held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will return home on Saturday for Senior Day against Skidmore at 2:00 p.m.
  • RPI plays host to St. Lawrence on Saturday morning.
