Field Hockey Outlasted in Double Overtime Against St. Lawrence

Kovel, Baker each score a goal for the Brewers

Canton, NY - Caroline Hamilton scored the game-winning goal with 38 seconds left in double overtime to send St. Lawrence to a 3-2 victory over the Vassar College Field Hockey team in the Liberty League opener for the Brewers. Vassar's record moves to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in conference action while the Saints improve to 5-4 on the season and 2-0 in Liberty League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vassar got on the board just under five minutes into the first quarter as the Brewers earned a corner and junior Sydney Kovel scored her second goal of the season off sophomore Anna Hazewindus' third assist of the year.
  • The Brewers doubled the lead early in the second period on senior Tori Baker's fourth goal of the season on a feed from sophomore Karina Hoffman.
  • St. Lawrence cut the lead in half with a minute left in the first half on a Maja Helmer goal off an assist from Suzanne L'Hommedieu following a penalty corner.
  • The Saints tied the game at two all just one minute into the second half as Maggie Spire knocked home a goal off an assist from Hamilton.
  • Vassar had two strong chances with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter as senior Alexa Gwyn's shot was saved before Vassar earned a penalty stroke.
  • Saints goalkeeper Cara Vredenburg made a strong save on junior Sofia Beseth's attempt to keep the game tied.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Wiley turned away four shots in the first overtime from St. Lawrence to send the game to the second overtime.
  • Wiley made two saves in the first five minutes of the second OT period on Maddy Shaw before Vredenburg turned away a shot from Gwen with three and a half minutes left to extend the game.
  • St. Lawrence scored the game-winning goal with 38 seconds left in the second overtime off a penalty corner as Hamilton scored off an assist from Shaw.

FOR THE BREWERS

  • Kovel and Baker each scored a goal while Hoffman and Hazewindus both recorded an assist.
  • Gwyn finished three shots on goal along with Kovel registering two shots on net.
  • Wiley finished with eight saves in goal for the Brewers.

FOR THE SAINTS

  • Helmer, Hamilton and Spire each scored a goal while Hamilton, Shaw and L'Hommedieu recorded an assist.
  • Hamilton finished with five shots on goal while Shaw added three shots on net.
  • Vrendenburg made six saves in the victory in goal.

GAME STATISTICS

  • The Saints held the edge in shots at 21-10 and 11-8 in shots on goal.
  • St. Lawrence held a slim advantage in penalty corners at 11-8.

  • Vassar will travel to conference foe RPI on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
