Women's Volleyball Falls On the Road to #RV William Smith

Brewers will travel to #20 Ithaca tomorrow afternoon

Geneva, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team began a four-match road trip on Friday evening as the Brewers fell 13-25, 21-25, 16-25 to #RV William Smith at Bristol Gym in Liberty League action. Vassar's record moves to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in conference action while the Herons 13-2 on the season and 3-0 in Liberty League play.

FIRST SET
  • The Brewers opened the match with a 4-1 lead after a kill from senior Julia Hale and two aces from sophomore Holland Kaplan.
  • Following a block from Hale and sophomore Maura McAusland, William Smith rattled off seven straight points, led by two kills from Morin Montagne, to take a 9-5 lead.
  • Vassar battled back to cut the lead to 16-12 on an ace from Kaplan and a winner from Hale.
  • The Herons took nine of the final 10 points on three kills each from Montagne and Arielle Newsome to clinch the opening set.
SECOND SET
  • The two squads traded points in the early stages of the second set as a Kaplan kill evened the set at five all.
  • Vassar took a 11-8 advantage after three straight points following a kill from Hale and a block from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • The lead expanded to 15-10 behind kills from McAusland and Kaplan along with a block from Gutierrez and first year Erin Lovett.
  • William Smith drew even at 17 on a winner and ace from Malya Sayre and a kill from Hope van Dohlen.
  • The Herons pushed ahead 23-18 after kills from Montagne and Von Dohlen and a block from Jaylynn McCarthy before Vassar got within three points on a kill from Kaplan.
  • William Smith took the set following a VC attack error.
THIRD SET
  • VC earned a 4-2 lead to begin the set behind a kill from Lovett and an ace from senior Molly Ardren.
  • William Smith took a 9-5 advantage after a five-point run on three kills from McCarthy and an ace from Montagne.
  • A kill from Hale and a block from Anthony-Brumfield reduced the Herons lead down to 10-8.
  • The Herons expanded their lead to 18-10 behind a kill from Montagne and an ace from Kali Vanderhoof.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead down to six points following a kill from Hale and a block from Anthony-Brumfield and Hale.
  • After William Smith expanded the lead to 22-12, VC used two kills from McAusland and a block from Kaplan and Hale to cut the lead down to 22-15.
  • Sayre buried two kills to close out the three-set victory for the Herons.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland finished with eight kills, five digs, a block and an ace while Hale registered seven kills and three blocks.
  • Kaplan added seven winners, four aces and three digs and Gutierrez had two kills and two blocks.
  • Sophomore Francesca Medrano handed out 14 assists and four digs while Ardren finished with 10 assists, an ace and three digs.
  • Junior Ellie Kogan tallied five digs for Vassar.
FOR THE HERONS
  • Montagne buried a match-high 14 kills and added seven digs along with Sayre finished with 12 kills, two aces and seven digs.
  • McCarthy tallied nine winners while Von Dohlen registered seven kills and two blocks.
  • Delainy Williams recorded a match-high 37 assists and two aces while Vanderhoof lifted a match-high 12 digs and added three aces.
