Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to #21 Rochester

Hoffman scores lone goal for the Brewers

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team fought hard against #21 Rochester at home on Sunday afternoon as the Brewers fell 2-1 to the Yellowjackets in overtime in the conference finale. The Brewers move to 3-14 overall and 1-6 in conference action while Rochester improves to 15-3 and 5-2 in conference play.

How It Happened
  • Following a scoreless opening quarter, Vassar threatened early in the second as first year Zoe Robinson put two shots on goal that were saved, one by Kara Houston and one by Mara Heppard, along with sophomore Anna Hazewindus and junior Sofia Beseth registering shots on net.
  • The Brewers earned a penalty corner where sophomore Karina Hoffman deflected a shot from Hazewindus past the goalie to put Vassar ahead 1-0 with 11 minutes left in the second period.
  • Vassar's defense stood tough late in the half as Grayson Honig and Sophia Cuneo had shots saved by sophomore goalie Grace Wiley followed by a defensive save from sophomore Gianna Hoover on a second Cuneo shot.
  • Wiley turned away two more shots at the end of the period to keep the Vassar 1-0 lead at the end of the opening 30 minutes.
  • After another scoreless period in the third, Rochester evened the score at one on a goal from Kristina Fedorova off an insert from Mara Heppard.
  • The Yellowjackets scored the game-winner three minutes into the first overtime period on a shot from Hannah Mehta.
For The Brewers
  • Hoffman scored her second goal of the season and is now third on the team in points with seven.
  • Hazewindus recorded her fourth assist of the year and is tied for the team lead.
  • Hoover earned her team-leading seventh defensive save of the season and leads the Liberty League in the category.
  • Wiley made five saves in goal for Vassar.
For The Yellowjackets
  • Mehta scored the game-winning goal while Fedorova also tallied a goal.
  • Heppard finished with an assist and a defensive save.
  • Houston made five stops in net in the victory for Rochester.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a slim 14-13 advantage in shots while Rochester had an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers earned a slim advantage in corners at 7-6.
