Women's Volleyball Falls Just Short in Five Set Heartbreaker

Brewers return home on Wednesday to take on Bard

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team played its second of three straight home matches on Saturday as the Brewers fell just short in a 25-27, 25-18, 25-15, 28-30, 10-15 heartbreaker against conference foe Skidmore. Vassar's record move to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play while the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-13 and 4-4 in Liberty League action.

FIRST SET
  • Skidmore earned a 6-3 lead to open the match behind a Madison Manning kill along with an ace from Jazlin Chen and a block from Rudi Reyes and Chen.
  • Vassar battled back to take an 8-7 lead after an ace from sophomore Maura McAusland and winners from seniors Julia Hale and Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • The lead grew to 14-11 on a block from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and first year Erin Lovett before Skidmore tallied four straight points to regain the lead.
  • Back-to-back kills from Hale pushed Vassar back ahead 20-17 until the Thoroughbreds drew even at 21 on a kill from Manning.
  • A winner from sophomore Holland Kaplan tied the set at 25 all before Skidmore used a kill from Natalie Pedersen to take the set.
SECOND SET
  • Following a Pedersen kill that evened the set at six all, Vassar pushed ahead 9-6 after winners from McAusland and Anthony-Brumfield.
  • The Brewers lead expanded to 16-10 following an ace from senior Molly Ardren and a kill from Lovett.
  • Consecutive aces from Catriona Hoelperl cut the Vassar lead to 16-14 until the Brewers rattled off five straight points on two kills and an ace from Kaplan.
  • Skidmore would get within 23-18 on a Reyes kill until McAusland and Kaplan notched consecutive winners to take the set.
THIRD SET
  • Both teams traded runs in the early stages of the set as Skidmore broke through to take a 10-7 lead on a Angie Mozrall kill.
  • Vassar answered with six straight points behind two blocks from Kaplan and Hale and an ace from McAusland.
  • The Brewers pushed the lead to 20-11 after seven consecutive points on three Anthony-Brumfield winners and an ace from junior Ellie Kogan,
  • Manning's winner trimmed the Vassar lead to 21-14 before Vassar tallied winners from McAusland and Hale to clinch the third set win.
FOURTH SET
  • The fourth set turned into a marathon as extra points were needed to decide the set.
  • The Thoroughbreds went ahead early 7-3 following two kills from Chen and a block from Mozrall and Maya Stolarz.
  • Vassar took a lead of its own at 11-8 after two kills from Kaplan and back-to-back aces from McAusland.
  • Skidmore battled back to take a 14-13 lead following two kills from Hoelperl.
  • A McAusland kill put Vassar back ahead 20-18 until a Chen winner regained the lead for Skidmore.
  • Skidmore pushed the Brewers to set point at 25-24 until McAusland buried a kill to extend the set.
  • Vassar put the Thoroughbreds on match point at 28-27 before Skidmore rallied for three straight points, capped by two solo blocks from Chen, to push the match to the deciding fifth set.
FIFTH SET
  • After an ace from Kaplan put Vassar ahead 2-1, Skidmore rattled off seven straight points, led by two kills from Stolarz and an ace from Manning.
  • A kill and a block from Chen pushed the Thoroughbreds lead to 11-4 until Vassar battled back with three straight points behind a kill from McAusland and blocks from Anthony-Brumfield, Hale and McAusland.
  • Vassar got within 14-10 after kills from Gutierrez and McAusland before Skidmore clinched the match on a kill from Manning.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland buried a match-high 18 kills, four aces, 10 digs and two blocks while Kaplan recorded 14 kills, 22 digs, five aces and four blocks.
  • Hale recorded 10 kills and five blocks along with Lovett adding six winners and a block.
  • Anthony-Brumfield registered five kills and two blocks and Gutierrez finished with three kills and four blocks.
  • Ardren handed out a team-high 20 assists and six digs along with senior Hailey Hayes adding 19 assists and 15 digs.
  • Kogan lifted 20 digs along with nine assists and an ace.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Manning tallied a team-high 16 kills, two aces and 15 digs while Chen recorded 12 kills and six blocks (four solo).
  • Pedersen finished with eight kills and six digs along with Mozrall adding six kills and two blocks.
  • Hoelperl registered a match-high 34 assists, two kills, five aces and 13 digs.
  • Athena Braverman lifted a team-best 21 digs while Isobel Streeper lifted 15 digs.

  • Vassar closes its homestand with a conference matchup with Bard on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
  • Skidmore heads to a tri-match at Stevens on Saturday.
