Women's Volleyball Rolls to Third Straight Victory Against St. Lawrence

Brewers earn second straight conference victory, take on Skidmore tomorrow afternoon

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team cruised to its third straight victory on Friday evening as the Brewers earned a 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 sweep over St. Lawrence at Kenyon Hall in conference action. Vassar improves to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Saints fall to 3-16 on the season and 1-6 in Liberty League action.

FIRST SET
  • St. Lawrence took a 7-4 lead to open the set as three kills from Araiza Acum-Santos and an ace from Lily Snide spurred the early advantage.
  • Vassar fought back to even the set at eight on back-to-back kills from seniors Frannie Anthony-Brumfield and Julia Hale.
  • Following the Saints scoring three straight to go ahead 11-8, the Brewers answered with six straight tallies, led by a kill each from sophomores Maura McAusland and Holland Kaplan to go ahead 14-11.
  • St. Lawrence tied the set at 16 all on a block from Bridget Gammons and Kate Gardner until VC used a kill from Kaplan, block from McAusland and junior Rebecca Gutierrez and a Kaplan ace to push back ahead 19-16.
  • Rose Meihaus' winner put St. Lawrence within two before Vassar used back-to-back Kaplan winners to clinch the opening set.
SECOND SET
  • Vassar surged ahead 11-3 in the second set behind three winners from McAusland, two kills from first year Erin Lovett and two service aces from senior Hailey Hayes.
  • The lead expanded to 16-5 after winners from Anthony-Brumfield, McAusland and Kaplan and an ace from McAusland.
  • St. Lawrence cut the lead to 23-16 on an Acum-Santos service ace until a Hale kill earned the Brewers the second set victory.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar dominated the early stages of the set as they raced out to an 11-2 lead after four aces from Kaplan and a kill each from McAusland and Lovett.
  • St. Lawrence used six straight points to cut the lead to 15-11 behind a kill from Sofia Velasquez, a Kori Meissner ace and a block from Gammons and Adeline Riesenberger.
  • Consecutive aces from senior Molly Ardren extended the lead to 19-12 until the Saints got within five on a Gardner winner.
  • St. Lawrence got as close as 24-20 before a Hale winner clinched the sweep for the Brewers.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland tallied a match-high 10 kills, two blocks and six digs while Kaplan recorded eight kills, five aces and seven digs.
  • Lovett added five kills and two blocks along with Hale registering four kills and four blocks.
  • Ardren handed out a team-high 14 assists and added three aces while Hayes finished with nine assists, two aces and four digs.
  • Junior Ellie Kogan lifted five digs and added five assists.
FOR THE SAINTS
  • Velasquez and Acum-Santos each buried a team-high eight kills while Gammons tallied two kills and four blocks.
  • Vanessa Latam handed out a match-high 18 assists and six digs along with Meissner adding three aces and six digs.

  • Vassar plays host to Skidmore tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
  • St. Lawrence heads to Union for a 2:00 p.m. match tomorrow.
