Field Hockey Outlasted in Overtime Thriller to William Smith

Brewers play conference finale against Rochester on Sunday afternoon

Geneva, NY - Hannah Huston score the game-winning goal halfway into overtime on Friday afternoon as the Vassar College Field Hockey team fell in a tight 2-1 contest to William Smith in road conference action. Vassar falls to 3-13 overall and 1-5 in Liberty League play while the Herons improve to 7-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team could crack the scoreboard in the first half as each team recorded a shot in the opening 30 minutes.
  • Six minutes into the second half, junior Sofia Beseth scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Brewers ahead 1-0.
  • Sophomore goalie Grace Wiley kept the Brewers ahead just before the end of the third period on a save off a shot from Caroline Kogut.
  • William Smith evened the game at one with just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter on a Kogut goal off an insert from Hannah Huston.
  • Sophomore Anna Hazewindus threatened to put Vassar back on top with two minutes left off a corner but her shot was stopped by William Smith goalkeeper Baker Jeremiah.
  • Following a corner halfway through the first overtime period, Huston deflected in a shot from Abby Jones to give the Herons a 2-1 overtime victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Beseth tied the team-lead in goals with five while first year Zoe Robinson recorded two shots.
  • First year Ava Salvati and Hazewindus each registered a shot on goal.
  • Wiley made four saves in goal for Vassar in the loss.
FOR THE HERONS
  • Huston finished with a goal and an assist while Kogut added a goal and Jones tallied an assist.
  • Kogut led the team in shots with four and Leah Griffith registered two shots on net.
  • Jeremiah made three saves in goal for the win for the Herons.
GAME STATISTICS
  • William Smith held a 10-5 edge in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal.
  • The Herons also had a slim 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.

  • Vassar plays its conference regular season finale against Rochester on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
