Schenectady, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team earned its first conference victory of the season as the Brewers outlasted Union 25-19, 25-13, 19-25, 9-25, 15-4 in the five-set thriller followed by a 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 sweep of SUNY Cobleskill in the nightcap. Vassar's record improves to 4-12 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
VC 3 UNION 2
FIRST SET
- The Brewers rattled off the first seven points of the opening set behind two kills each from senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield and sophomore Maura McAusland along with a winner and ace from sophomore Holland Kaplan.
- Union battled back to cut the lead to 11-9 following Graciela Escobar service ace and forcing a VC timeout.
- The Garnet Chargers drew even at 11 on a block from Shelby McKim and Allie Kronenberg before Vassar tallied four straight points, led by two aces from sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez and a block from first year Erin Lovett and senior Julia Hale.
- A kill from Shannon McGrath put the Garnet Chargers within one at 15-14 until the Brewers answered with five consecutive points behind a kill each from Anthony-Brumfield and Kaplan along with an ace from sophomore Francesca Medrano and a block from Hale and Anthony-Brumfield.
- Erin Stevens' kill reduced Vassar's lead to 21-17 before the Brewers answered with an ace from junior Ellie Kogan and a kill from McAusland to take the opening set 25-19.
SECOND SET
- Vassar began the second set with a 7-5 edge following kills from Gutierrez and McAusland and expanded the lead to 9-6 on an ace from Gutierrez and a winner from Kaplan.
- Four straight points from VC on two kills from Kaplan and two aces from Medrano forced a Union timeout at 13-7.
- Vassar's lead grew to 19-9 after an ace from Kogan along with kills from McAusland, Kaplan and Anthony-Brumfield.
- The Garnet Chargers got within 22-13 on a kill from McGrath until the Brewers used back-to-back kills from Lovett and a Union error to earn the second set win 25-13.
THIRD SET
- Union raced out to an 8-3 lead behind three kills from McGrath, a winner from Adrienne Long and an ace from Georgia Pool.
- Following a timeout, VC recorded three straight points, led by a kill and ace from McAusland, to cut the lead to two.
- The Garnet Chargers pushed the advantage to 16-8 after back-to-back kills from McKim and a winner each from Kronenberg and Georgia Pinciaro.
- Vassar cut the lead down to 20-14 following kills from Gutierrez, McAusland and Lovett.
- An ace from Medrano and a kill from Kaplan trimmed Union's lead down to 23-19Â before a winner from McKim and an ace from Escobar earned the Garnet Chargers the set victory 25-19.
FOURTH SET
- Union earned a 6-2 advantage to begin the fourth set on an ace from McKim and a McGrath kill.
- The Brewers cut the lead down to 8-6 after consecutive kills from Lovett before Union extended the lead to six at 12-6.
- The Garnet Chargers expanded the lead to 17-7 after a kill from Pinciaro and an ace from Emma Main.
- Union earned eight of the final nine points of the set to take the fourth set 25-9.
FIFTH SET
- Vassar took the first four points of the deciding set after a kill from Lovett and back-to-back aces from Kaplan.
- Following a kill from Pinciaro, the Brewers tallied back-to-back points on a kill from McAusland an ace from Gutierrez to force a Union timeout.
- The Garnet Chargers trimmed the lead down to 7-4 on an ace from Sydney Scanlon before Vassar scored the final eight points as Kaplan's winner clinched Vassar's first conference victory of the season.
FOR THE BREWERS
- McAusland put together an impressive match as she finished with a team-high 17 kills, 18 digs, two blocks and an ace.
- Kaplan added 13 kills, a career-high five aces and 14 digs along with Lovett burying a season-high 12 kills and two blocks.
- Anthony-Brumfield tallied five kills and four blocks while Hale tallied four winners and five blocks.
- Gutierrez added four aces, two kills and two blocks and Medrano recorded 25 assists, eight digs and four aces.
- Senior Molly Ardren registered 18 assists along with Kogan tallying a career-high 18 digs, seven assists and two aces.
FOR THE GARNET CHARGERS
- McGrath recorded 11 kills and 10 digs while McKim finished with 10 winners, two aces and four blocks.
- Pinciaro tallied seven kills and four digs along with Kronenberg registering four kills, 19 assists, seven digs and two blocks.
- Pool finished with a team-high 13 digs and an ace while Escobar added two aces and six digs.
VC COBLESKILL
FIRST SET
- The two teams traded points early as back-to-back kills from Anthony-Brumfield put Vassar ahead 6-4.
- Cobleskill evened the set at six all on a kill from Maya Cardenas-Powell before the Brewers regained the lead to 14-9 on consecutive winners from McAusland and Lovett and an ace from Kogan.
- VC's lead grew to 20-13 behind two aces and a kill from Gutierrez to force a Cobleskill timeout.
- The Fighting Tigers cut the lead to 22-17 on a kill from Hallie Gasner until Vassar used a kill from Hale, block from Gutierrez and McAusland and a winner from McAusland to take the opening set 25-18.
SECOND SET
- The Brewers earned a 4-1 lead to open the set behind aces from McAusland and Gutierrez along with kills from Gutierrez and senior Morgan Miller.
- The lead grew to 9-3 as Kaplan landed two service aces until Cobleskill cut the lead to 10-7 on an ace from Ashley Wright.
- Following a Gutierrez kill, the Fighting Tigers earned six straight points on three aces from Baylee Kirschberg to go ahead 13-11.
- Vassar answered with five straight points following two kills from Miller, a kill from Kaplan and a McAusland ace to regain a 16-13 advantage.
- Kathleen Smart's winner put Cobleskill within one at 19-18 before VC rattled off three straight points as McAusland and Kaplan each buried a kill along with Lovett and Gutierrez combing for a block.
- Vassar took the final three points of the set after an ace from Kogan and a kill from Lovett to win 25-18.
THIRD SET
- VC took a 7-3 advantage in the third set as McAusland, Anthony-Brumfield and Kaplan each buried a kill.
- Ashley Wright's kill got the Fighting Tigers within two before Vassar expanded the lead to 13-6 after two kills from Hale and a kill and ace from Kaplan.
- Smart recorded back-to-back kills to reduce the advantage to 14-9 before two kills from McAusland pushed the lead to 17-9.
- Vassar clinched the sweep after kills from Gutierrez and Anthony-Brumfield gave the Brewers a 25-15 set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
- McAusland buried a match-high nine kills along with two aces and five digs while Kaplan tallied six kills, four aces and seven digs.
- Anthony-Brumfield recorded six kills and Gutierrez finished with five kills, three aces, five digs and two blocks.
- Miller and Hale each added four kills while senior Hailey Hayes registered 17 assists, two kills and seven digs.
- Ardren finished with 11 assists and six digs along with Kogan lifting a team-high 10 digs.
FOR THE FIGHTING TIGERS
- Smart finished with four kills, two aces, two blocks and a match-high 12 digs while Gasner added three winners and three digs.
- Kirschberg tallied three kills, three aces, seven assists and seven digs along with Cardenas-Powell registering three kills.
- Ciarra Jager recorded two kills and three blocks and Jojo Haycock lifted 10 digs.
