Men's Basketball Falls on the Road Against Skidmore

Five players tally double digits for the Brewers in the defeat

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball traveled north on Tuesday evening as the Brewers fell 82-71 to Skidmore in a Liberty League clash on the road. Vassar fell to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference action while the Thoroughbreds improve to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in Liberty League play.

FIRST HALF
  • Skidmore took an early 9-2 lead following a jumper from Jake Walsh before sophomore JP Miranda knocked down a triple at the 14:56 mark to stop the early run.
  • Junior Alex Walters tied the contest at nine apiece on a three-pointer before a triple from Nick Padilla pushed Skidmore back ahead with 13:09 to go.
  • First year Shea Fitzgerald's three-pointer with 8:55 tied the game at 14 before the Thoroughbreds went on a 8-0 run as Walsh's triple at the 7:00 mark put Skidmore ahead 22-14.
  • Vassar answered with five straight points following a three-pointer from Walters and a lay-in from first year Sebastian Medina to cut the lead to 22-19 with a little over six minutes remaining.
  • A driving lay-in from Prince Shyllon with 41 seconds put Skidmore ahead 35-29 but two free throws from senior Logan Scott put Vassar within four at the half.
  • Vassar closed the opening 20 minutes shooting 37.9-percent overall, including 4-for-12 from three, and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
  • Skidmore shot 41.2-percent from the field in the first half, including 5-for-17 from three-point range, and was 2-for-3 from the free throw stripe.
SECOND HALF
  • The Thoroughbreds lead grew to nine following two free throws from Aidan Roy at the 17:56 mark as Skidmore opened the half on a 6-2 run.
  • Vassar tallied the next six points as a lay-in from Fitzgerald reduced the advantage to three at the 16:37 mark.
  • After a three-pointer from Padilla put Skidmore ahead 49-42 with 14:46 to go, two buckets from Miranda and a floater from Medina got the Brewers within one at the 13:27 mark.
  • The Brewers drew even at 53 on a three-pointer from Miranda before the Thoroughbreds drilled back-to-back threes to take a five-point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
  • Following a three-pointer from Hakeem Daphnis to go ahead 64-57, a bucket from first year Avery Lee and a dunk from Medina trimmed the lead down to three with 7:59 left.
  • Fitzgerald's bucket at the 4:53 mark got Vassar within two but Daphnis' triple pushed the Thoroughbreds ahead 71-66.
  • Joey Skoric's layup with 1:31 remaining put Skidmore ahead 76-68 before Fitzgerald knocked down a three-pointer at the 1:21 mark to cut it to five.
  • Skidmore made six free throws in the final minute to clinch the 82-71 victory.
  • The Brewers finished the second half shooting 44.7-percent, going just 3-for-12 from three, and were 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
  • The Thoroughbreds closed the final 20 minutes shooting 53.8-percent overall, including 6-for-11 from three, and were 13-for-14 from the free throw stripe.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Fitzgerald led Vassar with 19 points on 8-for-16 shooting and added three rebounds and two assists.
  • Lee tallied 13 points, a team-high three assists and two rebounds while Medina recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Miranda added 12 points, five boards and two assists while Walters chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Roy finished with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Padilla recorded 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting and Walsh registered 12 points, five assists and three boards.
  • Daphnis added 10 points, four assists and three boards while Skoric tallied four points, six boards, two assists, two steals and four blocks.
GAME STATS
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 41.8-percent overall and made seven three while going 8-for-11 from the free throw line.
  • Skidmore shot 46.7-percent from the field, including 11-for-28 from three, and was 15-for-17 from the free throw stripe.
  • Vassar held a 38-22 edge in points in the paint and 15-0 in second chance points.

  • Vassar continues its seven game road trip as they head north to take on RPI on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
  • Skidmore travels to take on RIT on Friday night.
