Men's Basketball Drops Road Conference Matchup Against RPI

Vassar heads to RIT tomorrow afternoon to continue its seven game road trip

TROY, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team continued its seven game road trip on Friday night as the Brewers fell 73-54 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at ECAV Arena in Liberty League action. The Brewers fall to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play while the Engineers improve to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in Liberty League contests.

FIRST HALF
  • Both teams opened the first four minutes strong as first year Shea Fitzgerald tallied five quick points along with a lay-in from sophomore Nathan Denham that put Vassar ahead 11-9.
  • Avery Eugster scored three straight points to give the Engineers a 12-11 lead at the 14:12 mark before junior Luke Adams' bucket drew the Brewers even at 13.
  • RPI rattled off the next 17 points, led by six from Yechiel Stewart and five from Jonny Angbazo, to take a 30-13 lead with 6:13 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
  • First year Avery Lee scored four straight points for Vassar to cut the lead down to 15 with 3:17 remaining in the first half before a triple from Adams got the Brewers within 34-20 with two minutes left.
  • A three-point play for A. Eugster pushed RPI ahead by a first half high 17 points with 57 seconds left until a jumper from sophomore Sacha Greenberg cut the halftime advantage to 15.
  • Vassar was held to 25-percent overall in the first half, going 2-for-12 from behind the arc, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe.
  • The Engineers shot 43.3-percent from the field, including 4-for-8 from three, and finished 7-for-11 from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF
  • Adams canned two three-pointers early in the second half, forcing a Rensselaer timeout at the 16:45 mark down 42-28.
  • RPI went on a 7-2 run over the next two and a half minutes as a jumper from Dylan Matchett pushed the Engineers ahead 49-30.
  • Pat White's layup with 10:42 left put the Engineers ahead 57-37 before buckets from first year Sebastian Medina and Fitzgerald cut the lead down to 16 with just under eight minutes to go.
  • A triple from sophomore JP Miranda trimmed the RPI lead down to 64-48 with 4:09 remaining but the Brewers couldn't get the lead cut below 16 in the final four minutes.
  • Vassar shot 42.9-percent in the second half, including 5-for-15 from three, while going 2-for-4 from the free throw line.
  • RPI shot a blistering 62.5-percent, including 4-for-7 from three, and was 2-for-6 from the free throw line.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Adams finished with 11 points, including three triples, and also handed out a team-high three assists.
  • Lee tallied 10 points off the bench while Miranda recorded eight points.
  • Fitzgerald registered seven points, two steals and two assists along with Denham adding six points, five boards and two steals.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Angbazo poured in a game-high 21 points along with six rebounds and three assists along with A. Eugster tallying 19 points and nine boards.
  • Matchett finished with seven points, six assists and four rebounds while Stewart knocked down two triples.
  • Andrew Deppe recorded five points, three assists and two blocks and PJ Scalisi added five points and five rebounds.
GAME STATS
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 33.3-percent overall while knocking down seven triples and was 7-for-9 from the free throw line.
  • The Engineers shot 51.9-percent from the field, including 8-for-15 from three, and finished 9-for-17 from the free throw line.
  • RPI held a 40-22 edge in points in the paint and 8-2 advantage in second chance points.
  • Vassar finished with a 12-10 edge in points off turnovers.
