Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker at Clarkson

Clarkson hits game-winning shot at the horn in overtime

POTSDAM, NY - Ryan Miles-Ferguson knocked down a game-winning jumper at the horn in overtime as the Vassar College Men's Basketball team fell 74-73 in overtime to Clarkson on the road in conference action on Friday night. The Brewers drop to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in Liberty League play while the Golden Knights improve to 11-7 on the season and 5-6 in conference play.

FIRST HALF
  • After a jumper from first year Shea Fitzgerald gave Vassar a 8-7 lead at the 16:20 mark, Clarkson scored six straight points with a bucket from Jack Dalgety putting the Golden Knights ahead 13-8 with 14:34 remaining.
  • Junior Luke Adams' layup at the 12:09 mark reduced the lead to one followed by an Adams triple tying it at 22 all with 10:19 to go.
  • Miles-Ferguson's bucket with 7:08 to go in the half pushed Clarkson ahead by six followed by a three-point play from Braeden Burns gave the Golden Knights an eight point advantage with 3:06 remaining.
  • Adams knocked down a three with 2:18 left in the first half before Burns converted a jumper to give Clarkson a 38-31 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
  • Vassar closed the first half shooting 41.2-percent from the field while going 3-for-12 from three-point distance.
  • Clarkson finished the half shooting 53.6-percent overall, including 2-for-9 from three, while converting 6-for-9 from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF
  • Back-to-back Miles-Ferguson three-pointers to open the half gave the Golden Knights a 13 point advantage with 17:31 remaining.
  • Vassar answered with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes as first year Kreekor Karageuzian's layup at the 10:20 mark put the Brewers within one.
  • Another bucket from Miles-Ferguson pushed Clarkson's lead back to six with 7:18 to go before two free throws from sophomore Nathan Denham evened the score at 53.
  • Dalgety canned a triple with 1:52 left in regulation put the Golden Knights ahead 61-56 until the Brewers tied it at 61 all on a three-pointer from junior Alex Walters and two free throws from Fitzgerald with 53 seconds remaining.
  • Finn Cork's lay-in with 30 seconds left put Clarkson ahead by two before Walters buried another triple to put the Brewers ahead by one with just 23 seconds to go.
  • Burns was sent to the free throw line with 10 seconds remaining and converted one to tie it at 64, giving Vassar a chance to win it in regulation where Fitzgerald's attempt at the horn rattled in and out.
  • Both teams traded buckets in overtime before Steve DeRegis deep three put Clarkson ahead 69-68 with 2:30 left in the extra period.
  • DeRegis connected on another triple to push the Golden Knights ahead by four until a three-pointer from Denham and two free throws from Fitzgerald gave the Brewers a 73-72 lead with 1:20 left.
  • Neither team scored in the final minute until Miles-Ferguson hit a turnaround jumper right before the end of the period to take an overtime victory for Clarkson.
  • The Brewers shot 45.8-percent in the second half, including 5-for-15 from three, while going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Vassar finished the overtime period going 3-for-6 overall, including 1-for-3 from bonus distance, and were just 2-for-6 from the free throw stripe.
  • Clarkson was limited to 35.7-percent from the field, finishing 5-for-15 from deep, and were just 1-for-2 from the free throw line. The Golden Knights went 4-for-9 in overtime, including 2-for-4 from three, and missed its only two free throw attempts.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Denham led the way for Vassar off the bench with a double-double with 16 points (6-for-7 shooting), 12 rebounds and five steals. Fitzgerald tallied 11 points, four assists, three steals and five rebounds.
  • Adams registered 11 points, a team-high five assists and three boards along with Karageuzian tallying 10 points, three assists and two steals.
  • Walters connected on three triples for nine points while sophomore JP Miranda added five points and five rebounds. 
FOR THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
  • Miles-Ferguson tallied a game-high 26 points (11-for-20 shooting), three assists and three rebounds while Cork tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Dalgety added 12 points, four assists and two steals along with Burns recording 10 points and eight boards.
  • DeRegis knocked down three three-pointers for nine points and added three boards.
GAME STATS
  • Vassar finished the game shooting 43.8-percent overall, including 9-for-30 from three-point range, while shooting 8-for-14 from free throw line.
  • Clarkson shot 44.6-percent from the field, going 9-for-28 from three, while converting 7-for-13 from the free throw stripe.
  • The Golden Knights held a slim edge in points off turnovers at 15-11.
  • Vassar finished with a 13-4 advantage in second chance points as well as 34-28 edge in points in the paint.

  • Vassar will take on St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
  • Clarkson will play host to Bard in a 4:00 p.m matchup on Saturday.
