Field Hockey Shutouts RPI in Liberty League Opener

Hoffman, Ishimine score first goals of the season

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team opened Liberty League play on Wednesday evening as the Brewers posted a 2-0 shutout against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Weinberg Field. The Brewers improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action while the Engineers fall to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in Liberty League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a scoreless opening quarter, Vassar got on the board about three minutes into the second quarter as senior Juliana Ishimine deflected in a pass from classmate Tori Baker to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Brewers tacked on the second goal of the game on first year Karina Hoffman's score off a feed into the circle from senior Maggie Werner with 10 minutes left in the first half.
  • RPI threatened to cut the lead down to one at the seven minute mark of the third quarter as senior Heidi Compton made a defensive save on Natalie Yu.
  • First year goalkeeper Grace Wiley turned away Julie Thomas' shot with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter to clinch the shutout.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Hoffman and Ishimine each recorded their first goal of the season for the Brewers.
  • Baker tallied the first assist of the season in their senior campaign while Werner recorded her second assist of the season.
  • Senior Sarah Dumaresq earned the win in goal in 30 minutes of action while Wiley made one save in 30 minutes in goal for Vassar.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Thomas and Yu each had a shot on goal for RPI.
  • Sophie Clancy made two defensive saves while Sarah Nace made four saves in goal in the loss.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar plays host to conference foe William Smith on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
  • RPI will take on Rochester at home on Saturday.
