Field Hockey Falls In Double Overtime to #23 MIT

Engineers score with 2:21 left in double OT

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Ingrid Tomovski scored with 2:21 left in double overtime to give #23 MIT a 3-2 victory over the Vassar College Field Hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The Engineers improve to 6-3 on the season while the Brewers fall to 5-3 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar got on the board first as sophomore Sofia Beseth knocked home a pass from senior Juliana Ishimine with three and a half minutes left in the opening quarter.
  • The Brewers doubled its lead quickly in the second quarter as senior Tori Baker deflected in a feed from classmate Hailey Brigger just under two minutes into the second quarter.
  • MIT had a chance to cut the lead in half right before the end of the half but senior Sarah Dumaresq stopped Faith Choe's shot to keep it 2-0 at the half.
  • Following a scoreless third quarter, the Engineers trimmed the lead to one on a goal from Eva Oppenheim off an assist from Bailey McIntyre.
  • MIT goalkeeper Anna Duncan made three saves following two penalty corners from Vassar before MIT evened it at two with four minutes left on Tomovski's goal after an insert from Alice Zehner.
  • In the second overtime period, Vassar had five shots saved by Duncan following a penalty corner three minutes into the period.
  • Tomovski's goal with just under two and a half minutes in the double overtime period gave MIT a 3-2 comeback victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Beseth's goal was the sophomore's team-high seventh of the season while Baker scored her second of the season.
  • Beseth tallied six shots on the day while Brigger recorded five shots on goal.
  • Senior Heidi Compton recorded a defensive save while Dumaresq made three saves in goal.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Tomovski scored two goals for MIT while Oppenheim added a goal and McIntyre and Zehner each recorded an assist.
  • Tomovski led in shots with six along with Oppenheim and Zehner each recorded two shots.
  • Maeve Zimmer made two saves in goal in the first half while Duncan earned the victory in relief with 11 saves.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar opens Liberty League play against RPI on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m.
  • MIT returns to NEWMAC action against Wheaton on Saturday.
