Brewers, Garnet Chargers Battle To Scoreless Draw

Zimmer posts third shutout of the season

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team opened Liberty League play on Saturday with a hard fought 0-0 home draw with visiting Union. Senior goalkeeper Teresa Zimmer (Long Valley, NJ) closed the game with her third shutout of the season.
 
Saturday's result moves Vassar to 5-2-1 overall on the season and 0-0-1 in Liberty League play, while Union stands at 2-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference competition.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar finished the opening period with an 8-4 advantage in shots, including an attempt by Claire Karlin (Arlington, VA) in the eighth minute that hit the left post and would not go.
  • In the 25th minute, Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) rang the right post after unleashing a shot from 30 yards out.
  • McGrath was also denied by Union keeper, Rachel Berliner, late in the first half to keep the game scoreless heading into the intermission.
  • In addition to its shot advantage prior to the break, Vassar took the only three corner kicks of the first 45 minutes.
  • Karlin and Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) were each denied by Berliner early in the second half to keep the game deadlocked.
  • Union's best chance of the game came in the 64th minute when Sam Friedman put a shot just over the bar from the left wing.
  • Vassar had three corner kicks in the final four minutes and shot from Ashley Butler (Hopkinton, MA) tipped over the bar with under a minute to go.
  • Vassar outshot Union 7-1 in the second half and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • Berline was forced to make five saves after the break to earn the shutout.
 
For The Brewers
  • Zimmer was not forced to make a save in the game and picked up her third shutout of the season. Her goals against average drops to 0.76 with her save percentage holding at .806.
  • McGrath led the team with four shots, including two on goal.
  • Karlin and Butler each finished with two shots and a shot on goal.
  • Rodriguez, Grace Romano (Bordentown, NJ) and Maddie Wolf (Mars, PA) all finished with shots on goal.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Berliner earned the shutout in goal with seven saves in the contest.
  • Friedman and Meg Piser paced the squad with two shots apiece.
 
Match Statistics
  • Vassar finished with a 15-5 advantage in overall shots and a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers dominated corner kicks, 9-0.
