WENHAM, MA - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team returned to action for the second day of the Gordon Invitational as the Brewers swept Mount Saint Mary 25-17, 26-24, 25-9 before falling in a tight five set match against the Fighting Scots 13-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 12-15 in the nightcap. HOW IT HAPPENED VS MSMC
- First Set
- Vassar opened up the first set with a 10-6 lead following a kill and an ace from first year Maura McAusland along with a solo block from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
- The Brewers expanded its lead to 14-8 on four straight points, including a kill from junior Julia Hale and an ace from sophomore Melia Voss.
- The lead grew to 21-13 as first year Holland Kaplan and McAusland buried two winners, followed by the duo registering back-to-back kills to take the first set 25-17.
- Second Set
- The Knights ran out to a 13-5 lead as Erin Lema landed four straight aces along with a kill.
- Vassar fought back to tie the set at 15 apiece as Anthony-Brumfield notched two kills, McAusland landed two aces and sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez added a winner.
- Lema's kill put MSMC ahead 19-17 before the teams traded points before Vassar went ahead 23-22 following a Anthony-Brumfield winner.
- Vanessa Mleczko's kill tied the set up at 24 all before Vassar took the second set following two MSMC miscues.
- Third Set
- The Brewers scored the first seven points of the set as Kaplan buried three kills while Voss tallied three service aces.
- Vassar's lead grew to 17-4 as McAusland recorded two kills while Kaplan recorded two aces and sophomore Ellie Kogan added an ace.
- A solo block from sophomore Molly Delahunty and an ace from junior Molly Ardren completed the sweep for Vassar.
FOR THE BREWERS
- McAusland finished with nine kills, three aces and eight digs to lead Vassar while Kaplan recorded seven kills, three aces and five digs.
- Anthony-Brumfield tallied five kills and three blocks.
- Voss handed out 19 assists and added five digs and four aces while Kogan lifted eight digs.
- Vassar finished the contest hitting .237 on 29 winners.
FOR THE KNIGHTS
- Jonaiya Williams recorded five kills, five digs and two blocks along with Mleczko added four winners and three aces.
- Aubriana Boyce handed out 13 assists and added four kills.
- Isabella Israel lifted six digs along with Brooke Lavelle registering three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS GORDON
- First Set
- The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 14-3 lead as Joey Keltner's kill pushed Gordon ahead by 11.
- Vassar trimmed the lead down to single digits on a kill from Hale to make it 19-10.
- Annie Zimmerman's winner handed the Fighting Scots the first set victory.
- Second Set
- Following Gordon taking a 7-4 advantage on a Keltner kill, Vassar answered with seven straight points on two aces from first year T Petro, two blocks from Voss and Hale along with kills from Hale, Kaplan and McAusland.
- Gordon answered with six straight of its own to go ahead 15-13 on an ace from Kate Howe.
- Hale buried a winner to tie the set at 21 apiece before three straight kills from Zimmerman clinched the set for Gordon.
- Third Set
- Gordon began the set with an 8-3 lead on a winner and ace from Keltner and a block from Howe and Evey Hanson.
- Vassar brought the lead down to 13-12 on an ace from Anthony-Brumfield before the three straight tallies from Gordon pushed the lead back to 18-13.
- The Brewers fought back to tie the set at 22 on back-to-back kills from McAusland before Vassar scored the final three points of the set on a winner from McAusland and Voss followed by an ace from Delahunty.
- Fourth Set
- Vassar jumped out to an 8-4 lead following a winner from Hale, an ace from Delahunty and a block from McAusland and Hale.
- The Fighting Scots battled back to take a 16-12 lead on an ace from Howe.
- Vassar answered to tie the set at 21 all on a kill from Kaplan before Gordon tied it at 23 apiece on a winner from Zimmerman.
- Vassar recorded back-to-back kills from Kaplan to force the deciding fifth set.
- Fifth Set
- The two teams traded points as the set was tied at nine after winners from VC's Kaplan and Gordon's Howe.
- The Brewers took an 11-9 on a winner from Kaplan before back-to-back aces from Zimmerman put the Fighting Scots ahead 13-11.
- After a McAusland kill, Kelter and Annie Murphy recorded back-to-back winners to clinch the five set victory for Gordon.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Kaplan led the way with 22 kills, three aces and 11 digs along with McAusland tallying 14 kills, three blocks and four digs.
- Hale recorded seven kills and six blocks while Voss handed out 43 assists along with three blocks and eight digs.
- Kogan lifted 11 digs for Vassar in addition to Petro tallying eight digs.
FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS
- Keltner recorded 18 kills, 10 digs, two aces and three blocks to lead Gordon.
- Murphy tallied 14 kills and three blocks along with 12 kills, two aces and two blocks from Zimmerman.
- Howe registered 47 assists, seven kills, four aces and eight digs.
- Nikki Batson lifted a match-high 14 digs while Alexa Quinones added 11 digs and four aces.
