Women's Volleyball Sweeps Saint Joseph (CT), Falls In Four to Neumann

Brewers return for Day Two of the Vassar Quad at 4:00 and 6:00 tomorrow

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team split its opening two matches of the Vassar Quad as the Brewers completed a 25-21, 25-15, 25-20 sweep of the University of Saint Joseph before falling in the nightcap to Neumann 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25. Vassar's record moves to 2-3 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 0-5 and the Knights improve to 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS USJ
  • FIRST SET
    • Both teams traded early points in the opening set as a winner from first year Maura McAusland put the Brewers ahead 9-8.
    • The Blue Jays answered with four straight points, including two aces from Claire Quinn, to take a 12-9 advantage.
    • Following the set being knotted at 19, an ace from first year T Petro along with a kill from junior Julia Hale put Vassar up 24-19 and led to the first set victory
  • SECOND SET
    • Vassar rolled out to an early 8-4 lead as two kills from McAusland and sophomore Molly Delahunty led the early surge.
    • The lead expanded to 18-9 as three straight points, including two kills from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield and one from first year Holland Kaplan.
    • Hale's winner for the set point pushed Vassar ahead 2-0.
  • THIRD SET
    • Following an early 4-1 lead by the Brewers, Saint Joseph regained the lead at 8-6 on a kill from Shannon Carey.
    • Vassar answered with a strong run as Anthony-Brumfield landed two aces while McAusland and sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez buried two winners.
    • USJ brought the lead down to one point following back-to-back errors, but the Brewers collected two kills from Anthony-Brumfield and one from junior Molly Ardren to complete the three set sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland had the team-high in kills with 12 and added nine digs while Anthony-Brumfield tallied nine winners and hit .818 on the match.
  • Hale and Kaplan each landed five kills along with Delahunty adding four winners and two blocks.
  • Petro finished with four aces as well as six digs for the Brewers.
  • Ardren handed out 16 assists while sophomore Melia Voss recorded 15 assists.
FOR THE BLUE JAYS
  • Shaye Harris notched a team-high nine kills and lifted six digs.
  • Carey and Rachel Heaney tallied six kills each.
  • Alexandra Long registered 13 assists and five digs while Fernanda Ayala Rodriquez lifted a match-high 13 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS NEU
  • FIRST SET
    • The two teams were tied at 10 apiece following a winner from Kaplan for Vassar.
    • Neumann scored three straight on kills from Naye Cruz and Lauren Garvey to go ahead 13-11.
    • The Knights then recorded 12 of the next 13 points to take the set 25-12 following a string of kills from Garvey and Regan Hickey.
  • SECOND SET
    • The Brewers answered strong to begin the second as a block from Delahunty and Hale put them ahead 5-2.
    • Neumann surged back to gain a 10-7 lead following a solo block from Jules Dill.
    • The Brewers responded with a run to go ahead 18-14 after multiple winners from McAusland.
    • Anna Mansel's winner cut the lead down to two before a service error gave the Brewers the set victory.
  • THIRD SET
    • The Knights raced out to an 8-2 lead early as three aces from Claudia Bournazel spurred the rally.
    • Vassar stormed back to get the lead down to one following a kill from junior Hailey Hayes.
    • Neumann collected six of the next eight points to move ahead 20-14 on a Garvey kill before Vassar trimmed it back down to two following kills from McAusland and Hale.
    • The Knights scored the final four points of the set as Hickey tallied two winners to take the third set.
  • FOURTH SET
    • Neumann took a quick 8-4 lead as Cruz and Garvey once again buried kills for the Knights.
    • Kaplan's winner trimmed the lead down to one at 13-12 for Vassar.
    • After a Delahunty aces made it 17-16, Neumann scored four straight behind the efforts of Garvey, Cruz and Emma Dobberstein.
    • Vassar got within one multiple times in the final points but the Knights earned the match victory on a kill from Mansel.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan tallied a team-high 12 kills while McAusland finished with seven kills and 16 digs.
  • Delahunty added two aces and four blocks.
  • Ardren had a team-high 22 assists while sophomore Ellie Kogan lifted 10 digs.
FOR THE KNIGHTS
  • Garvey recorded a match-high 19 kills along with Hickey tallying 15 winners and 13 digs.
  • Cruz finished with nine kills and two blocks.
  • Dani Smith handed out 42 assists and added 11 digs.
  • Doberstein recorded 11 digs and two aces for Neumann while Bournazel had 12 digs and three aces.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • All three teams return to action tomorrow at the Vassar Quad with Neumann and Saint Joseph beginning the day at 10:00 a.m.
  • Vassar will play Hartford and Wheaton (Mass.) at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
