Brewers Knock Off #21 Wesleyan, 2-1

Karlin nets game winner

Middletown, CT – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team got back into the win column Tuesday night with a 2-1 road win at #21 Wesleyan. Gigi Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) and Claire Karlin (Arlington, VA) supplied the scoring for Vassar and were two of four players to record a point in the win.
 
Vassar, who played its third ranked opponent in its last four contests, improves to 5-2 overall on the season and moves to 3-0-1 in its last four meetings with Wesleyan. The Cardinals fall for the first time in 2023, dropping to 4-1 on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar was held without a shot in the game until the 38th minute when Lindsey Nihei (Honolulu, HI) missed high at the 37:06 mark of the contest.
  • Just under three minutes after the Brewers' first shot, the team broke through with the opening goal at the 39:52 mark of the tilt.
  • Panarelli opened the scoring in the 40th minute when she finished off a pass from Grace Romano (Bordentown, NJ).
  • Vassar withstood a late chance from the Cardinals to carry the one goal advantage into the break.
  • Wesleyan finished the opening 45 minutes with a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Vassar maintained the 1-0 goal lead until the late stages of regulation when it doubled its advantage in the 79th minute.
  • Karlin and Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) connected at 78:84 to give the Brewers a 2-0 advantage.
  • Wesleyan put together a late charge that resulted in its only goal of the game with 1:06 left to play.
  • Catherine Gallagher found the back of the net with 66 ticks left on what proved to be the Cardinals' final attempt of the game.
  • Wesleyan outshot Vassar 8-2 after halftime and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.

  • Katie O'Connell and Serena Sink picked up assists on the Wesleyan goal.
  • Waverly Meyers led all players in the game with five shots.
  • Molly Brumbach finished with a single save in goal.

  • Wesleyan finished with a 15-6 edge in overall shots, but just a slim 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
