POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team returned to Kenyon Hall on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell 17-25, 16-25, 11-25 in the opening match against William Paterson before responding with a 25-12, 25-9, 25-8 sweep of Maritime in the nightcap. Vassar's record moves to 5-5 overall while the Pioneers improve to 8-1 and the Privateers fall to 3-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS WP
- FIRST SET
- Vassar and William Paterson traded early points in the opening set as a kill from first year Holland Kaplan put the Brewers ahead 7-6.
- The Pioneers pulled away with an 15-11 lead on a winner from Cecilia Miller and then expanded its lead to 20-13 on a block from Miller and Abby Houpt.
- Vassar trimmed the lead down to 21-17 following an ace from sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez before William Paterson took the final four points and clinched the set on an ace from Natalie Zabloudil.
- SECOND SET
- The Pioneers raced out to a 5-1 lead early on two aces from Zabloudil and a block from Sofia Zablackis and Laura Gruener.
- Vassar answered back and took an 8-7 lead on a kill from Kaplan before William Paterson scored seven of the next eight to pull ahead 16-10.
- An ace from sophomore Ellie Kogan cut the advantage down to 23-16 but Zabloudil's winner took the second set.
- THIRD SET
- William Paterson scored 11 of the first 15 points of the set as Houpt's kill gave the Pioneers a 11-4 lead.
- Vassar took the lead down to 16-10 on a winner from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
- The Pioneers took nine of the final 10 points of the set as an ace from Miller completed the sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Kaplan and McAusland each recorded eight kills while Kaplan added nine digs.
- Anthony-Brumfield added five kills while Kogan lifted five digs.
- Sophomore Melia Voss handed out 19 assists and added three digs.
FOR THE PIONEERS
- Zabloudil led the way with a match-high 10 kills, six aces and seven digs.
- Miller registered nine kills, three aces and nine digs while Zablackis recorded seven kills and two blocks.
- Houpt handed out a match-high 24 assists and added two blocks.
- Ciara Feliz landed four aces along with Paola Molina tallying 14 digs and two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS MARITIME
- FIRST SET
- Vassar took an early 8-1 lead as junior Hailey Hayes tallied two kills while first year Maura McAusland and Voss landed aces.
- The lead grew to 18-6 on back-to-back kills from Gutierrez.
- Jessica Mele's kill cut the lead to nine at 21-12 before a kill from Hayes recorded the first set victory.
- SECOND SET
- Vassar raced out to another early edge as two kills from junior Morgan Miller and two aces from first year T Petro put the Brewers ahead 6-2.
- Vassar's advantage increased to 16-5 after back-to-back winners from McAusland and an ace from Miller.
- Hayes, Miller, Anthony-Brumfield and junior Molly Ardren each tallied a kill in the final five points to take the second set.
- THIRD SET
- The Brewers once again took an early edge as Vassar went ahead 12-3 following two aces from Kogan and two kills from Miller.
- Vassar's lead grew to 19-5 on a winner from McAusland.
- The Brewres took six of the final seven points as two kills from McAusland along with a solo block clinched the sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
- McAusland recorded a match-high 11 kills while Hayes tallied nine kills, three aces and eight digs.
- Miller added eight winners and six digs along with Anthony-Brumfield and Gutierrez registering six kills each.
- Ardren handed out a match-high 28 assists and added four digs.
- Kogan lifted a team-high nine digs.
FOR THE PRIVATEERS
- Mele had five kills and six digs while Ashley Pavarini recorded two kills and two digs.
- Victoria Cordero lifted a match-high 11 digs and added two service aces.
