Brewers Cruise To Season Opening Sweep

Vassar opens Cretella Tennis Center with victory over Bard

Poughkeepsie, NY – Playing for the first time at the brand new Richard L. Cretella Tennis Center, the Vassar College Men's Tennis team opened the 2023-24 season with an impressive sweep over visiting Bard on Friday afternoon. Vassar dropped just four games in the match in its first action of the season.
 
Friday's win moves Vassar to 1-0 both overall and in Liberty League competition and scores its 12th straight victory over the Raptors dating back to the 2011-12 season.
 
Doubles
  • The Brewers did not drop a doubles game on Friday to the Raptors, winning each of the three matches 8-0.
  • The second pair of Jay Wong (Hong Kong) and Ethan Mantell (Hermosa Beach, CA) were the first match to finish on Friday, moving to 1-0 on the season.
  • Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) and Benjamin Almquist (Union Pier, MI) won their first match of the season at the third doubles position.
  • The top flight was won by Nolan Kubiak (Neenah, WI) and Eugene Lee (Chico, CA), who made his collegiate debut in the match.
 
Singles
  • Vassar dropped just four total games over the six singles matches on Friday in completing the sweep.
  • Lee, who won at first doubles, closed a strong first match for the Brewers with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of his opponent from Bard at the second singles position.
  • Fellow first year Henry Zhang (Zhengzhou, China) finished the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the fourth position.
  • Competing at the top singles flight, Wong put together an impressive 6-1, 6-0 triumph for Vassar.
  • Mantell made his season debut in singles at the third position and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
  • Arun Guruswamy (Hauppauge, NY) was in action at the fifth slot for the Brewers and eased to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
  • Nihal Kothari (Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) collected the sixth singles victory for the Brewers in a 6-2, 6-1 decision.

  • Vassar continues the fall schedule with a trip to the Haverford Invitational September 22-24.
  • Bard hosts Union on Wednesday.
