Women's Volleyball Earns Four Set Victory Over New Paltz

First year duo of McAusland and Kaplan combine for 28 kills

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team returned to Kenyon Hall on Wednesday evening as the Brewers earned a hard-fought 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 victory over New Paltz. The Brewers improve to 4-4 overall while the Hawks drop to 6-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • FIRST SET
    • Vassar took an early 5-3 in the opening set as sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez landed an ace along with a winner from first year Maura McAusland and a solo block from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
    • Following a kill from first year Holland Kaplan that regained a one-point lead, the Hawks reeled off five straight points on four kills from Mackenzie Williams to go ahead 14-10.
    • The Brewers responded with a run of its own as a Kaplan kill along with two aces from McAusland put them ahead 19-16.
    • New Paltz took four of the final five points in the set as a winner from Jamie Albrecht gave the Hawks the first set victory.
  • SECOND SET
    • The Hawks took a 10-8 lead in the second set on a kill from Cate DiGiacomo before Vassar tied it at 12 on a kill from McAusland.
    • Following a winner from Letisha Perez to put NP up 17-15, the Brewers scored four straight to go ahead by two as Kaplan and sophomore Molly Delahunty each recorded a winner.
    • A winner from Gutierrez along with an ace from Delahunty clinched the set victory for the Brewers.
  • THIRD SET
    • Vassar scored the first four points of the set on a kill from McAusland and two aces from Kaplan.
    • An ace from sophomore Melia Voss put the Brewers ahead 13-8 but the Hawks came back and took a 16-15 lead on a kill from Victoria Venus.
    • Following a kill from Albrecht that tied the set at 21 all, Vassar scored the final four points on blocks from Delahunty and Voss along with one from Kaplan and Gutierrez.
  • FOURTH SET
    • New Paltz took a 12-5 lead in the fourth set as Emma Mahoney's service ace gave the Hawks the seven point advantage.
    • After a kill from Perez put NP up 15-8, the Brewers rattled off 10 straight points, capped off by a Kaplan ace to go ahead 18-15.
    • The Hawks tied it at 18 on an ace from DiGiacomo before the Brewers scored the final four points of the set and were led by kills from McAusland, Kaplan and Anthony-Brumfield to take the four set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland registered a match-high 16 kills and added two aces, two blocks and three digs.
  • Kaplan added 12 kills, three aces, two blocks and nine digs.
  • Gutierrez tallied four kills, three aces and four blocks while Delahunty added three aces and two blocks.
  • Voss handed out 31 assists and recorded two aces and seven digs along with sophomore Ellie Kogan, who lifted a match-high 12 digs.
FOR THE HAWKS
  • Williams led the Hawks with 12 kills and six digs while Perez and Albrecht each added 10 winners.
  • DiGiacomo recorded 38 assists, four kills, three aces, two blocks and seven digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Vassar will host William Paterson and Maritime in a tri-match on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
  • New Paltz heads to the Misericordia Tournament, beginning on Friday.
