Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten At Home With Win Over Montclair State

Three different Brewers tally a goal for the 3-1 victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team remained unbeaten at home on Wednesday evening as the Brewers defeated Montclair State 3-1 at Weinberg Field. Vassar improved to 3-1 overall while the Red Hawks fell to 2-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar got on the board first in the opening quarter as sophomore Sofia Beseth put home a goal following the rebound of Hailey Brigger's shot at the 6:37 mark.
  • The Brewers doubled its lead in the second quarter when Vassar received back-to-back penalty corners which lead to senior Maggie Werner deflecting in a pass from Brigger to make it 2-0 with about two minutes left in the half.
  • Vassar quickly pushed the lead to three in the opening minutes of the second half as senior Molly Zahnleuter flicked one over the goalkeeper.
  • Montclair State put back-to-back shots on goal from Tori Sutera and Carly Amerman as both were saved by senior Heidi Compton before leading to a penalty stroke goal from Gab Maisto with five minutes left in the final quarter.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Beseth tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season while Brigger picked up her fourth point.
  • Werner recorded her second goal on the year along with Zahnleuter tallying her first goal of the season.
  • Senior Sarah Dumaresq earned the victory in the first 30 minutes of action while freshman Grace Wiley played the final 30 minutes.
  • Compton registered her first two defensive saves in the 2023 campaign.
FOR THE RED HAWKS
  • Maisto scored the lone goal of the contest for Montclair State while Sutera and Amerman recorded the other two shots.
  • McKenna Laman took the loss in net while making two saves.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Vassar returns to Weinberg Field on Saturday against Ramapo at 1:30 p.m.
  • Montclair State heads to Muhlenberg on Friday afternoon.
