Women's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to #10 MIT

Kaplan registers seven kills, 11 digs for the Brewers

WENHAM, MA - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team opened the 2023 season at the Gordon Invitational on Friday night as the Brewers fell to #10 MIT 16-25, 15-25, 16-25. Vassar falls to 0-1 while the Engineers improve to 1-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • First Set
    • Engineers opened up the set with a 5-2 lead after kills from Emily Cheng and Lauren Keller along with an ace from Daphne Gavros.
    • A kill from first year Holland Kaplan trimmed the advantage down to 8-5 before MIT expanded its lead to 16-8 on a winner from Keller.
    • Kills from Kaplan and sophomore Melia Voss reduced the lead to seven before winners from Keller and Ashley Margetts took the opening set 25-16.
  • Second Set
    • Vassar recorded an early 4-1 advantage on a kill each from junior Julia Hale and sophomore Molly Delahunty while the duo also combined for a block.
    • MIT gained the lead at 8-5 on two aces from Margetts and a winner from Ali Gibbs.
    • Following back-to-back kills from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield and Voss to make it 20-15, MIT recorded the final five points as a kill from Consecrata Rozario earned the second set victory.
  • Third Set
    • Vassar opened up a 6-3 advantage on a kill each from Hale and Kaplan along with a double block from the duo, followed by a service ace from sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez.
    • MIT answered with seven straight points as Eileen Sadati landed two aces during the run.
    • The Brewers answered with a four point run to take a 14-13 lead on an ace from junior Molly Ardren before the Engineers concluded the match on a 12-2 run to earn the third set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan led the way with seven kills, 11 digs and two blocks while Hale tallied five kills and two blocks.
  • Voss finished with five kills, 12 assists and three digs along with Delahunty, Gutierrez and Anthony-Brumfield each recorded two blocks.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
  • Ella Gragg tallied a game-high nine kills while Rozario, Keller and Gibbs buried seven winners each.
  • Gibbs and Margetts each landed three aces and Emily Cheng scored two blocks and 10 digs.
  • MIT hit an impressive .340 in the contest with 43 kills.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Both teams will compete in day two of the Gordon Invitational as they will each take on the host Fighting Scots and Mount Saint Mary College tomorrow.
