Field Hockey Rolls to Season Opening Victory Over Marywood

Beseth tallies two goals to lead the Vassar offense

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Sophomore Sofia Beseth tallied two goals for the Vassar College Field Hockey team in its season opener as the Brewers cruised to a 4-0 win at Weinberg Field against Marywood on Friday afternoon. Vassar wins its 10th straight season opener while the Pacers fall to 0-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Brewers opened the contest with back-to-back penalty corners before Beseth knocked home the first goal of the contest on a rebound off a save from Pacers goalkeeper Leah Ewing at the 5:22 mark.
  • Vassar pushed its lead to two on a sweet penalty corner goal as senior Maggie Werner deflected in a feed from senior Hailey Brigger to close the half with a 2-0 lead.
  • Following a scoreless third period, Beseth recorded her second goal of the game about two and a half minutes into the quarter followed by senior Jaclyn Narleski recorded a breakaway goal in the final minute of the fourth period.
FOR VASSAR
  • Beseth tallied two goals on the day and finished with three shots on goal while Brigger finished with an assist and three shots on goal.
  • Werner and Narleski each tallied a goal while Narleski recorded two shots on net.
  • Senior Sarah Dumaresq earned the win in goal for Vassar and made one save on the day.
  • Senior Kate Neikirk registered a defensive save for the Brewers.
FOR MARYWOOD
  • Belle Coleman and Cassie Slusser each tallied a shot on goal for the Pacers.
  • Ewing took the loss in net as she made eight saves.
STAT LINES
  • Vassar held the strong edge in shots on the contest as the Brewers outshot Marywood 17-2 and 12-2 in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers also dominated penalty corners by a 13-4 margin
