Baseball Drops Two To Skidmore

Vassar returns to action on Wednesday afternoon against CCNY

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team fell twice in a Liberty League doubleheader against Skidmore on Saturday as the Thoroughbreds won game one, 8-6 and triumphed in game two, 13-11. The Brewers move to 14-10 overall and 2-4 in Liberty League play while Skidmore improves to 16-6 and 7-2 in conference action.

Skidmore scored first in game one as Trey Bourque singled home Danny Melillo in the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead in an early pitcher's duel.

Vassar put a big number up in fifth as junior Jack Silvera singled home freshman Jensen Bergman followed by senior Andrew Kanellis driving in Silvera and junior Jaden Millstein to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead. Junior Reid Lapekas laced a bases clearing double down the left field line to plate three runs as Vassar held a 6-1 lead after five.

Skidmore answered with a big inning of their own as Max Mello singled home Jackson Hornung followed by pinch-hitter Zachary Leiderman driving in two on a single through the left side to cut the lead to 6-4. Melillo's bases clearing triple put Skidmore back in front at 7-6 and Bourque's infield single added on an insurance run for the Thoroughbreds.

Freshman Addison Lee started on the mound for Vassar as he went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, three walks and struck out four. Senior Frankie Murphy took the loss in relief as he gave up two runs. Senior Zach Magee tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief for the Brewers.

Quinn Hocum took a no-decision for Skidmore as he lasted 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs, three walks and struck out four. Aaron Kats took the win as he escaped the fifth inning with no runs allowed while getting one out in relief. Justin Posnik earned a six-out save for Skidmore with two scoreless inning and struck out two.

Lapekas finished with two hits and three RBI for Vassar while Silvera and Bergman each added two hits and Kanellis drove in two runs. Melillo, Bourque and Brendan O'Neill each had two hits for Skidmore while Melillo knocked in three runs and Bourque and Leiderman drove in two runs each.

The Brewers opened up game two with a three run first inning as Kanellis tripled home Millstein followed by a RBI bunt single from Lapekas that scored Kanellis. Junior Ty Murray knocked in the third run of the inning on a RBI single that plated senior Adam Talwalkar. 

Skidmore responded with five runs in the second as Eddie Galvao's infield single plated a run followed by Jaden Torrado and O'Neill scoring on a throwing error to tie it at three. The Thoroughbreds took the lead on a Hornung two RBI single that scored Melillo and Galvao. Vassar knotted it at five in the bottom half of the inning as Silvera knocked in a run followed by Talwalkar's RBI double.

The Thoroughbreds put together a big inning in the sixth as Galvao's bases loaded hit by pitch scored a run followed by a RBI walk by Anthony Mollica. Melillo's bases clearing triple pushed the Skidmore lead to 10-5 followed by a RBI groundout from Bourque. Mello's run-scoring infield single gave Skidmore a 12-5 lead after the top of the sixth.

Vassar cut the lead down to five in the bottom of the sixth as Kanellis' RBI double followed by a Silvera RBI single made the lead 12-7.

Galvao pushed another run across for the Thoroughbreds on a sacrifice fly in the seventh before Vassar trimmed the lead down to 13-10 on a RBI single from Millstein and a two RBI double from Kanellis in the bottom half of the inning. 

Vassar loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth as Kanellis' infield single knocked in one run but Skidmore reliever Grayden Harris escaped the ninth only allowing one run to take a 13-11 victory and a series sweep.

Sophomore Luke Barrientos took the loss for Vassar as he went five innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, three walks and struck out four. Senior Joe Sabo tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.

Ewen Donald started for the Thoroughbreds as he lasted two innings and gave up six hits, five runs, four walks and struck out two. Peter Martin earned the win in relief as he tossed 3.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and struck out two. Harris took the save as he threw 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, one run and struck out three.

Kanellis finished a big day with four hits, five RBI and scored two runs while Millstein had two hits and four runs scored. Silvera, Lapekas and Murray all had two hits for Vassar. Mello and Torrado each had two hits for Skidmore while Melillo and Galvao each drove in three runs and Hornung knocked in two.

Vassar will return to the field on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to CCNY at 4:00 p.m.
