POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team returned to Weinberg Field for the first time in two months on Friday evening as the Brewers fell 21-11 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action. The Brewers fall to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Engineers improve to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in Liberty League action.
Sophomore
Emma Torkelson opened the scoring for Vassar on an assist from senior
Kateri Sanseviro just 49 seconds into the contest followed by Megan Shay tying it for RPI about 25 seconds later. Back-to-back goals from seniors
Maddy Kretten and
Annie Uyeki put the Brewers ahead 3-1 at the 12:34 mark before the Engineers knotted it at three after goals from Lauren DeLeo and Shay. Another pair of goals from Kretten and junior
Lola Wright pushed the Brewers ahead 5-3 before RPI took its first lead at 6-5 on a tally from Quinn Wollard at the 7:50 mark. Sophomore Reilly Mulchahy's man-up goal tied the contest at six heading into the second quarter.
The Engineers scored all eight goals in the second quarter as four goals from Wollard, two from Lisa Boehmer and one each from Sophie Goddard and Shay put RPI up 14-6 at the half.
DeLeo's man-up goal and Boehemer's tally put the Engineers up 10 at the 13:14 mark before the two teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the quarter with two goals from Kretten and Sanseviro. RPI took a 19-9 lead after three quarters with a goal from Gabbie Valle.Â
Shay added two goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter while senior
Trina Chou and junior
Yael Gelman scored a goal each in the final 10 minutes for the 21-11 final.Â
Kretten finished with four goals and two ground balls while Sanseviro and Uyeki each added three points. Torkelson tallied two points, three ground balls and one caused turnover while sophomore
Emily Stoff had a team-high two caused turnovers. Freshman
Tess Billings led the team in draw controls with three. Junior
Lauren Johns made eight saves in goal for Vassar.
Shay tallied seven goals, eight draw controls and three caused turnover while Wollard scored five goals for RPI. Maready recorded three goals and 19 draw controls along with Boehmer finishing with three goals, four ground balls and two draw controls. Olivia Kimball earned the win in goal as she made six saves for the Engineers.
Vassar returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Ithaca in a Liberty League matchup at 2:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
