POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Sophomore
Reilly Mulcahy scored her fourth goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining in regulation as the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team earned a hard-fought victory over #17 Ithaca, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon. Vassar improves to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in Liberty League action while the Bombers fall to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in conference action.
Ithaca's Sydney Phillips scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Hayley Armstrong before the Brewers scored back-to-back goals from junior
Lola Wright and Mulcahy to go ahead 2-1 at the 12:43 mark. The Bombers scored twice to take the lead on goals from Maddie Hall and Chloe Nordyke with 11 minutes to go in the opening quarter. Vassar tallied four straight goals to close the first quarter as seniors
Annie Uyeki and
Kateri Sanseviro each scored once along with goals from Wright and Mulachy to earn a 6-3 lead.
Ithaca drew the game even at six following two goals from Maizy Veitch and one from Maddie Hall with 7:49 to go. Following the second goal of the game from Uyeki, Phillips and Caroline Wise gave Ithaca a 8-7 lead with 3:02 left in the half. Senior
Maddy Kretten's goal at the 1:58 mark tied it at eight before Hall scored her second of the game to give the Bombers a 9-8 advantage at halftime.
Ithaca scored twice in the third quarter on tallies from Veitch and Phillips along with one goal from Wright for Vassar to put the Ithaca lead at 11-9 after three quarters of play.
Kretten and Mulcahy each scored a goal to tie the game at 11 at the 13:34 mark before Veitch put the Bombers back ahead with a tally at the 8:55 mark. Sophomore
Emma Torkelson drew the Brewers even at 12 apiece at the 5:20 mark before Mulcahy clinched the Vassar victory with her fourth goal of the day with 32 seconds remaining.
Mulcahy finished with four goals, three ground balls and four draw controls while Wright added three goals. Uyeki tallied four points while Torkelson had three points with a goal and two assists. Junior
Livia Shine picked up a team-high four ground balls and added three caused turnovers along with senior
Trina Chou who had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman
Tess Billings added three draw controls for Vassar. Junior
Lauren Johns earned the victory in goal as she made nine saves.
Veitch tallied four goals and two assists for Ithaca while Phillips and Hall each scored three goals. Lexi Kellish secured three ground balls and two draw controls along with Wise adding 13 draw controls and two caused turnvoers. Kaitlyn Russell and Maggie Mandel each recorded two caused turnovers. Lexi Held took the loss in goal as she made eight saves for the Bombers.
The Brewers travel to Union College on Saturday, April 15th for a 12:00 p.m. matchup with the Dutchwomen.
