POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team battled hard against the #3 William Smith Herons as the Brewers fell 19-8 at Weinberg Field on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in Liberty League action while the Herons complete an undefeated regular season at 16-0 overall and 10-0 in Liberty League play.
William Smith scored the first three goals of the contest as Katherine Murray scored twice and Maddie Montgomery tallied a man-up goal with 7:16 to go in the first quarter. Sophomore
Emma Torkelson tallied an up goal of her own on an assist from senior
Maddy Kretten at the 6:15 mark before the Herons closed the quarter with two more goals, one from Natalie Daniels and one from Murray.
Daniels scored the first tally of the second quarter to push the William Smith lead to five before goals from Kretten and freshman
Tess Billings cut the lead down to 6-3 with 5:30 to go. From there, the Herons tallied the final three goals of the half as Murray, Montgomery and Emily Griffin gave William Smith a 9-3 lead at the half.
Coming out of the halftime break, Vassar scored three straight as sophomore

Kateri Sanseviro and Billings each found the back of the net to trim the lead down to three with 11:26 left in the third. The Herons regained its six goal advantage with three straight tallies as Murray, Hannah Evans and Kaitlin Pellechia put William Smith ahead 12-6 with 4:03 to go. Mulcahy recorded her second goal of the quarter at the 3:12 mark before an up goal from Montgomery with 25 seconds left in the quarter handed the Herons a 13-7 lead after three quarters.
William Smith scored six times in the fourth quarter as Montgomery and Allie McGinty scored twice along with a goal each from Murray and Molly Davis. Kretten tallied Vassar's lone goal of the quarter on an assist from Torkelson as the Herons earned a 19-8 victory.
Kretten, Mulcahy and Sanseviro each recorded three points for Vassar while Billings tallied two goals, two groundballs and four draw controls. Junior
Riley Kelly and freshman
Catherine Peacock each picked up three groundballs while Peacock added two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Junior
Lauren Johns took the loss in net as she made 16 saves for the Brewers.
Murray finished the day with six goals for the Herons while Montgomery tallied five goals, one assist and six draw controls. McGinty recorded four points and two groundballs while Daniels registered two goals and nine draw controls. Davis also had five draw controls and three groundballs and Nikki Pio had three caused turnovers and two groundballs. Maura Smeader earned the win in goal as she made five saves for William Smith.
Vassar will await the remaining games to be played today to see where they will fall in this year's Liberty League Championship field.
