Women's Lacrosse Takes Down St. Lawrence To Advance To Liberty League Semifinals

Brewers will take on second-seeded Ithaca on Friday evening

CANTON, NY - Seniors Kateri Sanseviro and Maddy Kretten combined for 10 points on the day as the sixth-seeded Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team defeated the third-seeded St. Lawrence Saints 13-11 in the Liberty League First Round on Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers advance to the semifinals for the first time since the postseason expanded in 2015 on Friday as they will travel to second-seeded Ithaca.

Sanseviro scored the opening goal for Vassar on an assist from classmate Annie Uyeki just over one minute into the contest before St. Lawrence tied it on a tally from Liz Evans on a feed from Rachel Burke. Kretten and Sanseviro scored the next three goals of the game to put Vassar ahead 4-1 at the 9:01 mark. The Saints answered with three straight goals of their own from Burke, Morgan Arakelian and Jacqui Cloutier to make it four all with 5:14 left in the opening quarter. Rookie Tess Billings fired one in the back of the net with 1:34 remaining to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead after one quarter.

Burke scored her second of the game to tie it at five early in the second quarter before Vassar scored four straight to close the half. Sophomore Reilly Mulcahy scored on a free position shot followed by an assist on a goal from sophomore Emma Torkelson. Uyeki picked up her second point of the day on a goal at the 5:53 mark before assisting on Kretten's third goal of the game with 2:46 left.

Sanseviro tallied her third goal of the game to begin the second half scoring on an assist from Kretten before the Saints slowed the Brewers run on Burke's third goal of the game with 6:13 left in the quarter. Kretten answered with her fourth tally of the game on a sweet pass from Sanseviro with just under five minutes left to make it 11-6 after three quarters.

Dana Fernandez cut Vassar's lead down to four at the 13:58 mark of the fourth quarter as she scored on a free position shot before Vassar responded with a goal from Torkelson on an assist from junior Lola Wright about 37 seconds later. Wright then tallied her first goal of the game on the man-up on another assist from Sanseviro to make it 13-6 with 11 minutes remaining. Elle Camp tallied her first goal of the game at the 9:37 mark before Arakelian scored the next three goals for the Saints to make it a three goal game with 4:10 left in the contest. Cloutier fired one in the back of the net with 1:34 to go to cut the lead to 13-11 but a big save by junior Lauren Johns with 44 seconds left sent the Brewers on to the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday.

Kretten finished with four goals and one assist while Sanseviro added three goals and two assists for the Brewers. Torkelson added two goals, five groundballs and a caused turnover while Uyeki recorded three points. Freshman Kali Ringler picked up three groundballs along with junior Livia Shine had two caused turnovers. Freshman Catherine Peacock won six draw controls and Mulcahy added five while Torkelson won four draw controls. Johns earned the win in goal as she had 11 saves for Vassar.

Arakelian led St. Lawrence with four goals, two groundballs and a caused turnover along with three goals and two assists from Burke. Maggie Green recorded five groundballs and three caused turnovers while Kate Wilson picked up five groundballs. Fernandez finished with three draw controls and Kelsey O'Brien had two caused turnovers. Raelynn Bovenzi took the loss in goal as she made six saves for the Saints.

Vassar will head to Ithaca on Friday for the Liberty League Semifinals with a time to be determined.
