AUBURNDALE, FL - Senior
Andrew Kanellis launched two home runs in game two for the Vassar College Baseball team as the Brewers notched a comeback victory in the second game of the doubleheader, 6-4 in nine innings, against Ursinus. The Bears took the first game of the doubleheader 7-4 as Vassar's record moves to 2-2 while Ursinus moves to 5-7.
URS 7 - VC 4
The Brewers struck first in the opening frame as sophomore
Ricardo Reyna singled through the right side to lead off the contest. After advancing to second and then moving to third on a balk, Reyna scored on a wild pitch to give Vassar an early lead. Senior
Adam Talwalkar reached on an error with two outs followed by a walk from junior
Reid Lapekas and then sophomore
Daniel Laderman laced a single to center field to take an early 2-0 lead.Â
The Bears drew even in the bottom of the third as Keegan Stem drew a one out walk and Will Kelley followed it up with a single to shallow center. After a sac bunt and an intentional walk with two outs, Tom Snipes drove in two runs with a single to center to score both Stem and Kelley to tie the game at two apiece.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ursinus scratched out a run to take the lead after Stem reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and was moved to third on a ground out to second. He then scored on a wild pitch with two outs to give the Bears its first lead at 3-2. Vassar responded in the top of the sixth as Lapekas led off the inning with a single through the left side and junior
Ty Murray blasted his first homer of the year to left center to put Vassar on top 4-3.
The Bears countered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as two scored on wild pitches, one on a fielder's choice and one on a VC throwing error to push Ursinus ahead 7-4 and completed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to take the game one victory.
Senior
Ryan Harris started on the mound for Vassar as he went 4.2 innings and allowed two hits, three runs, four walks and struck out four. Sophomore
Juan Mercado took the loss in relief as he went 0.1 innings and allowed one hit, four runs (three earned), two walks and struck out one. Sophomore
Jack Blau tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Brewers.
Mike Scheller earned the win on the mound for Ursinus as he threw six innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two walks and struck out five. David Kratz picked up the save with a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh.
Reyna tallied two hits for the Brewers while Laderman drove in a run and Murray knocked in two with his first homer of the season. Snipes finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while Kelly notched a hit for the Bears.
VC 6 - URS 4 (9 inn.)
Vassar opened up the scoring in game two in the bottom of the third when senior
Christian Baaki reached on an error to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Birch Herring-Jackson sacrificed him over to second and with two outs, senior
Andrew Kanellis launched his second home run of the season to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.
Ursinus countered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Solomon Griifith, Cory Burns and Kelley each knocked in a run to take a 3-2 lead. An additional run was tacked on in the bottom of the fifth when Kelley led off with a double and was later drove in on a sacrifice fly by Snipes.
The Brewers got one back in the sixth as Lapekas reached on a leadoff double and was moved to third on a single from junior
Jaden Millstein with no outs. Sophomore
Marc Milano cut the lead down to one on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly heading into the seventh. In the seventh, Reyna tallied another hit on the day to lead off the inning and ended up tying the game on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings.Â
The Bears threatened to walk it off in the bottom of the eighth as Jared Minnichbach worked a lead off walk and found his way to third with one out. Sophomore reliever
Pat Kerrigan induced a grounder that got Minnichbach at the plate and then induced another groundout to send the game to the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Reyna singled with one out on a bullet through the middle and Kanellis went deep for his second round trip of the game to give Vassar a 6-4 lead. Senior
Zach Magee entered for the save in the bottom half of the inning and worked around a two out walk to earn a split of the doubleheader.Â
Freshman
Addison Lee took the start for the Brewers and went five innings, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned), three walks and struck out six. Kerrigan earned the win with three shutout innings and allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out three. Magee tallied the save with a scoreless inning and struck out two.
Justin Simone started for the Bears and lasted three innings while allowing three hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and struck out three. Ayden Hughes tossed three innings in relief and gave up two hits, one run, one walk and struck out two. Minnichbach suffered the loss on the mound as he threw three innings and allowed four hits, three runs (two earned) and struck out one.
Reyna, Kanellis and Murray all tallied two hits while Kanellis drove in four runs on his two homers and scored twice for the Brewers. Six players recorded a hit for Ursinus while Kelley scored twice and also drove in a run. Burns, Griffith and Snipers all knocked in a run also for the Bears.
Vassar will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a twinbill with Wentworth starting at 2:45 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park #6 in Auburndale
