#2 Men's Volleyball Outlasts #4 Springfield in Five Set Thrilling Victory

A. Kim buries 19 kills in the triumph over the Pride

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team continued its record-setting winning streak with a thrilling 19-25, 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 15-8 victory over #4 Springfield on the road on Friday evening. The Brewers won its 17th straight contest and also completed its first ever season series sweep in program history of the Pride. Vassar's record improves to 18-1 overall while Springfield moves to 21-3 on the season.

After the two teams traded points in the opening set, Springfield scored four straight points to break a 9-9 tie on two blocks from Joel DeCamp and Dylan Mulvaney along with an ace from Jarrett Anderson. A kill and a service ace from senior Adam Gulick and a block from sophomore Gavin Akoto drew the Brewers within one at 14-13. A winner from Anderson put the Pride ahead 16-13 before a quick run from Vassar, capped by a kill from sophomore Payne Lounsbery, cut the lead to one at 17-16. A service ace from Ryan Roller put Springfield up three once again at 20-17 but the Brewers got the advantage down to one on a winner from Gulick. Springfield buried five straight points and a service ace from Anderson clinched the first set 25-19 win.

Vassar took an early 6-2 lead in the second set as kills from Akoto, Gulick and Lounsbery tallied points for the Brewers. Three straight points from Springfield on a kill from DeCamp, double block from DeCamp and Anderson along with a Noah Weislo ace to trim the lead to 10-7. Following a kill from senior Andrew Kim to go ahead 13-8, Springfield cut the lead down to one after two aces and a kill from Anderson. A Weislo winner put the lead at 14-13 before four straight points from Vassar, including a kill each from A. Kim and senior Gavin van Beveren, pushed the Brewers ahead 18-13. Vassar scored six of the final seven points of the set on two kills from A. Kim, a kill each from junior Colin Jones and Gulick and took the set on a block from Jones and Gulick.

The Brewers held an early 4-2 lead after a block from junior Jacob Kim and van Beveren but the Pride answered with four straight tallies on kills from DeCamp and Chris Rouleau along with a Weislo ace. A winner from Jones drew Vassar even at eight followed by a block from Gulick and Jones and a kill from A. Kim to force a Springfield timeout at 10-8. An Evan Costley kill for Springfield cut the lead to 14-12 before A. Kim's winner pushed Vassar ahead 20-16. The Pride got within two on back-to-back kills from Anderson and Mulvaney and then cut it to one at 22-21 on a DeCamp winner. Vassar took three of the next four as a block from A. Kim and van Beveren followed by a kill from A. Kim earned the third set victory.

Anderson registered three straight service aces to begin the fourth set followed by a block from Mulvaney and Rouleau and kills from Rouleau and Weislo to take an 6-1 early lead. The Brewers cut the lead to three on kills from van Beveren and A. Kim along with a block from J. Kim and van Beveren at 8-5 but Anderson's winner combined with a Weislo solo block pushed the lead back to 11-5. Springfield continued to expand its lead throughout the set as a winner from Costley put the Pride ahead 20-13. Springfield sent the match to a winner-take-all fifth set on a VC error.

The Pride took an early 3-2 lead in the fifth set as two kills from Rouleau and Costley gave Springfield the advantage. Four straight points from Vassar, stemmed by kills from A. Kim and Gulick pushed the Brewers ahead 6-3. A Mulvany service ace and a kill from Weislo brought the Pride within one before the Brewers worked to a 11-7 lead on a block from A. Kim and van Beveren to force a timeout. Kills from A. Kim and van Beveren pushed the fifth set to match point and A. Kim buried his 19th kill of the night to earn a hard-fought five set victory.

A. Kim finished with 19 kills, four digs and three blocks for Vassar while Gulick tallied 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks. van Beveren capped a strong outing with nine kills and six blocks along with Lounsbery who added nine kills, nine digs and two blocks. J. Kim handed out 40 assists and also recorded three blocks and six digs. Senior Jorge Adames Reyes lifted eight digs for the Brewers.

Anderson registered 14 kills, 11 digs and nine service aces for the Pride along with Rouleau adding 10 kills and five blocks. Weislo and Costley each tallied eight kills and totaled a combined seven digs. DeCamp finished with seven kills and three blocks while Mulvaney recorded 43 assists, five digs and five blocks.

Vassar will return to action tomorrow afternoon against American International College at 12:00 p.m. in Springfield.
