SPRINGFIELD, MA - The second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team cruised to its 18th straight victory on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers completed a 25-12, 25-15, 25-16 sweep over American International College on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers improve to 19-1 overall while the Yellowjackets fall to 2-20 on the season.
AIC opened the match with a 6-3 first set advantage as Robert Santana landed two aces along with a kill each from Santana and Hector Garcia Quiros. Vassar gained a 8-7 lead on kills from juniors
Vaughn Ramsey and
Andrew Guaragno before Santana tied it at eight on a winner. The Brewers scored five straight, led by kills from Guaragno and sophomore
Gavin Akoto, to regain the lead at 13-8. After a kill from Pedro Panelli to cut the Vassar lead to 17-11, the Brewers scored eight of the final nine points in the set as sophomore
Billy Fan, Akoto and Ramsey each buried kills for Vassar. Vassar took the first set on a double block from Ramsey and senior
Jordan Klembczyk.
Following an early 4-4 tie in the second set, Guaragno landed two kills followed by winners from senior
Joseph Harrington and junior
AJ Erickson to gain a 10-6 advantage. A kill from Jacob Thomas along with a VC error brought the Yellowjackets within one at 12-11 before Vassar went on a run and increased its lead to 20-12. Two kills from Harrington along with a kill and ace from Ramsey and a winner from junior
Tobias Clark put Vassar ahead as the Brewers rolled to a second set victory.
Vassar jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third as two kills from Ramsey and a block from Harrington and Akoto pushed the Brewers ahead. William Fitzpatrick's kill trimmed the Vassar lead to 10-9 before two winners from Ramsey and one from Zuckerman helped push Vassar back ahead at 14-9. The Yellowjackets got within 22-16 following a Thomas kill but the Brewers tallied the final three points, capped by a solo block from Ramsey and an ace from sophomore
Nick Villamil to clinch the sweep.
Ramsey finished with a team-high 14 kills and also added two aces, three digs and two blocks. Guaragno tallied six kills and a block along with Akoto registering five kills, five blocks and three digs. Harrington also tallied five kills and added four digs, three blocks while Zuckerman recorded four kills, two digs and two blocks. Erickson handed out a team-best 17 assists and lifted three digs while  Villamil tallied seven assists and four digs. Freshman
Casey McMenamin lifted a team-high six digs for the Brewers.
Santana tallied a team-best eight kills along with two aces and four digs for AIC. Thomas recorded five kills while William Fitzpatrick added two kills, 10 assists and three digs for the Yellowjackets.
The Brewers return home for a matchup with #1 Stevens on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Kenyon Hall.Â
