A. Kim Leads #2 Men's Volleyball To Four-Set Victory Over Misericordia

Senior buries 20 kills for the Brewers

DALLAS, P.A. - Senior Andrew Kim led the way with 20 kills for the second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team as the Brewers earned a 22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-20 road victory over Misericordia on Friday night. Vassar improves to 14-1 overall while the Cougars fall to 8-16 on the season.

Vassar opened the first set by scoring the first six points as A. Kim buried two kills and junior Vaughn Ramsey and freshman Tristan Christofferson combined for three blocks. Joe Kozak's service ace trimmed the lead down to 8-5 early followed by a double block from Kozak and Austin Hand to tie the set at 13 apiece. The Cougars went ahead 19-16 after kills from Zane Martin and Jackson Fehnel before a block from A. Kim and senior Gavin van Beveren tied the set up at 20. Two kills from Logan Romeika and a block from Romeika and Kozak closed out the first set 25-22 victory for the Cougars.

The Brewers started out strong again in the second set as a service ace from freshman Casey McMenamin, a kill from junior Andrew Guaragno and a block from van Beveren and Guaragno put Vassar ahead 7-2. Fehnel's winner kept the lead at five at 10-5 before A. Kim and Ramsey combined for three kills to push the Vassar lead to 17-7. Senior Jordan Klembczyk's service ace finished out the second set as Vassar tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-11 victory.

Misericordia jumped out to an 8-4 lead from two kills from Kozak and one winner from Martin followed by an ace from Hand. Three straight winners from A. Kim tied the set up at nine and an ace from rookie James Zuckerman gave the Brewers a 14-13 advantage. Two kills from Hand and one from Fehnel put the Cougars ahead at 17-14 after four straight points. Vassar responded with five of the next six points with A. Kim burying two winners and van Beveren adding a kill. Both teams traded points down the stretch before Christofferson buried a kill and Ramsey and van Beveren combined for a block to take the third set 25-23.

In the fourth set, van Beveren registered two early kills as Vassar went ahead 6-2 early. Fehnel's kill for the Cougars cut the Brewers advantage to 8-6 before two kills from A. Kim and a Misericordia error pushed the Vassar lead to 12-7. A winner from Hand reduced the Brewers lead to four at 17-12 until A. Kim buried four kills in a row for the Brewers and expanded the lead to 20-14. Kills from sophomore Tobias Clark and Ramsey led the Brewers to a 25-20 fourth set victory and a 3-1 match win.

A. Kim registered a match-high 20 kills for the Brewers and added three blocks and three digs. van Beveren finished with eight kills and five blocks while Ramsey added eight kills, seven digs and five blocks. Christofferson tallied five kills and four blocks along with Guaragno recording five winners and three digs. Junior AJ Erickson handed out a match-high 40 assists and added four digs while senior Jorge Adames Reyes lifted five digs.

Fehnel tallied a team-high 13 kills and six digs along with Hand recording 10 kills, three blocks and three digs. Romeika and Martin each had nine winners and also tallied a block apiece. Gannon DeFrain registered 39 assists, two kills and a team-high eight digs for the Cougars.

Vassar will return to action tomorrow afternoon against UVC foe Elmira at 2:00 p.m. in Elmira, N.Y.
