ELMIRA, N.Y. - Three players tallied double-digit kills for the Vassar College Men's Volleyball team as the Brewers tallied its 14th straight victory against conference foe Elmira 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-22. Vassar improves to 15-1 overall and 4-0 in UVC play while the Eagles drop to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The Eagles started out to an early 4-2 lead in the opening set after two kills from Oscar Munoz-Trindad and an ace from Alberto Mauricio. Vassar battled back and went ahead 12-9 following two winners from freshman
Tristan Christofferson. After a kill from Munoz-Trindad to cut the lead to 12-10, the Brewers scored six of the next seven points on two kills from sophomore
Billy Fan, one from senior
Gavin van Beveren and an ace from Fan. Munoz-Trindad cut the lead to 19-13 on a winner but two kills from senior
Andrew Kim and senior
Adam Gulick along with a winner each from Christofferson and Fan clinched the first set victory.
Elmira went ahead early in the second set as kills from Mauricio and Jordan Peiser gave them a 6-3 lead. The Brewers took the lead back at 8-7 after a kill from junior
Jacob Kim and a block from Gulick and Christofferson. The two squads traded points throughout the middle of the set as a Ryan Mattes winner tied the set at 12 apiece. The Brewers regained the lead at 18-14 after an ace from Fan and a kill from van Beveren before the Eagles cut the lead down to two on a kil from Mauricio. Vassar scored six of the final seven points in the set and were led by two kills from Gulick and two aces from A. Kim to take the second set.
Once again, the Eagles started strong with an 8-3 lead as kills from Peiser and Mauricio along with an ace from Joseph Powless gave them an early advantage. The lead expanded to 12-5 after three kills from Mauricion before Vassar climbed back in with a kill from Gulick and a solo block by van Beveren. The Brewers got the Elmira lead within two at 21-19 on a Gulick kill but two kills from Munoz-Trindad and one from Mauricio took the third set for the Eagles.
The two teams traded points back-and-forth in the beginning of the fourth set as Elmira held a 9-7 lead after a winner from Edwin Sosa. Vassar answered with four straight points as van Beveren buried two kills and Gulick added an ace to take a 11-9 advantage. Sosa's solo block tied the set at 15 apiece before a kill from Gulick and Fan pushed the VC lead to 18-16. Two kills from Mauricio along with a solo block from Max Cohen gave the Eagles a 20-19 lead before a kill from van Beveren, a Elmira error and an ace from Fan regained the Brewers lead at 22-20. VC took advantage of two Eagles errors in the final two points to earn its 14th straight win.
A. Kim tallied a team-high 13 kills along with four assists, three aces and a dig while Gulick buried 12 kills along with three blocks and eight digs. van Beveren finished with 10 kills, two blocks and two digs while Fan completed an all-around day with seven kills, three aces, two blocks and three digs. Christofferson added six kills and six blocks with J. Kim handing out 39 assists and adding two kills, a block and five digs. Senior
Jorge Adames Reyes lifted a team-high eight digs for the Brewers.
Mauricio recorded a match-high 22 kills to go with two aces, one blocks and a team-high eight digs. Munoz Trinidad added 13 winners, one ace and seven digs while Peiser tallied seven kills. Mattes chipped in two kills, two blocks and three digs while Cohen recorded a match-high 41 assists and Alex Vega lifted five digs.
The Brewers will return to action on Friday, March 17th when they take on Monroe College at Kenyon Hall at 4:00 p.m.
