Women's Lacrosse Drops Tight 12-11 Decision Against Rochester

Kretten and Torkelson each tally three goals for Vassar

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Lucy Haggerty scored the game-winning goal with 4:40 remaining in the fourth quarter as Rochester earned a thrilling 12-11 victory over the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers drop to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play while the Yellowjackets improve to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in conference contests.

Rochester opened up the contest scoring the first two goals as Grace Crochiere and Alyssa Gorny scored a goal each to take a 2-0 lead at the 7:01 mark. Senior Maddy Kretten got Vassar on the board on an assist from sophomore Reilly Mulcahy with 5:57 to go before Rochester regained a two goal lead on a tally from Lorelei King at the 4:37 mark.

Sophomore Kali Ringler cut the lead down to one on a goal following an assist from senior Annie Uyeki before the Yellowjackets countered again with a goal from Emma Little. Kretten scored her second of the game with 26 seconds left in the opening quarter to cut the lead to 4-3 following a quarter of play.

Mulcahy drew Vassar even at the 13:56 mark of the second quarter on the third assist of the game from Uyeki until Rochester answered with back-to-back goals from King and Haggerty to go ahead by two with 11:31 left. Mulcahy scored for the second time in the quarter along with a goal from Uyeki to tie the contest at six with 7:07 to go in the half. Following King's third goal for the Yellowjackets with six minutes left, sophomore Emma Torkelson and junior Yael Gelman gave the Brewers a 8-7 halftime advantage.

Torkelson opened up the second half with a goal for the Brewers to take its largest lead of the contest before goals from King and Gracie Giannettino tied the game at nine with 1:39 left in the quarter. Torkelson's third goal of the game with 22 seconds left in the quarter gave Vassar a one goal lead heading to the final period.

Kretten put the Brewers ahead by two at the 10:38 mark before goals from Haggerty and Gorny tied the contest at 11 apiece with eight minutes to go in regulation. Haggerty buried the game-winning goal with 4:40 remaining to give the Yellowjackets a 12-11 victory.

Kretten and Torkelson each tallied three goals along with Kretten adding two draw controls and Torkelson tallying two ground balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls. Mulcahy finished with two goals, three assists and two ground balls while Uyeki handed out a team-high four assists. Junior Livia Shine recorded two caused turnovers while freshman Catherine Peacock had a team-high seven draw controls and sophomore Madison Bouggess added five draw controls. Junior Lauren Johns made 14 saves in goal in the loss for Vassar.

King lead the team in goals with four while Haggerty added three goals, two assists and three ground balls. Gorny recorded two goals, two assists and a game-high eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Abbey Smith finished with six caused turnovers and five ground balls along with Crochiere winning three draw controls. Emily Geiss earned the win in net as she made seven saves for Rochester.

The Brewers continue their road trip as they head to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
