ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore
Reilly Mulcahy scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in overtime as the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 11-10 victory in its Liberty League opener against RIT on Friday night. The Brewers improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Tigers drop to 3-3 and 0-1 in Liberty league action.
Both teams tallied a goal in the first quarter as Carrissa Hlywa scored for RIT at the 8:26 mark before senior
Maddy Kretten got Vassar on the board with 6:09 left.
The Brewers scored the first five goals of the second quarter as Mulcahy scored her first of the night along with two goals from
Emma Torkelson and a goal apiece from Kretten and junior
Natalie Daigle to take a 6-1 lead at the 5:49 mark. RIT cut the lead to three at the halftime break as Milena Stephen and Lily DePalma scored in the final three minutes of the quarter.
The Tigers started the third quarter strong by scoring four goals to open the period as Julia Tenney scored twice along with Baylee West and Kayleigh Ground pushing RIT ahead at 7-6 with 5:16 to go. The Brewers regained the lead four minutes later as back-to-back goals from Mulcahy and junior
Lola Wright gave Vassar a one-goal advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Hlywa drew RIT even at the 11:53 mark on an assist from Zoe Heffernan before Mulcahy scored her third of the night to put Vassar ahead with 9:07 to play. The Tigers scored two goals in the final two minutes as DePalma's goal tied it at nine and a goal from Adele Jones with 32 seconds remaining gave RIT a 10-9 lead. Senior
Annie Uyeki sent the contest into overtime when she fired one in the back of the net with just two seconds remaining for the Brewers.
Mulcahy's goal with 35 seconds left in the first overtime period gave Vassar its first conference victory of the season and extended the team's winning streak to four games.
Mulcahy finished with four goals on the game while Kretten tallied three points for Vassar. Kretten added three caused turnovers while Torkelson added two goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Daigle picked up a team-high four ground balls while freshman
Kali Ringler tallied three caused turnovers. Rookie
Catherine Peacock recorded a team-best three draw controls. Junior
Lauren Johns earned the victory in net as she made 15 saves for the Brewers.
Three players registered three points for RIT while Ground and Jones each had two points. Jones picked up a team-high three ground balls and 10 draw controls while Morgan Nichter also added five draw controls. Rachel Kulp had two caused turnovers as well as two ground balls. Michelle Messinger made 17 saves for the Tigers in goal in the loss.
The Brewers return to action tomorrow afternoon against the University of Rochester with a game time scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
