Second-Ranked Men's Volleyball Earns Crucial UVC Victory Over #11 New Paltz

A. Kim buries 20 kills to lead Brewers to four-set victory

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Senior Andrew Kim buried 20 kills to lead the second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team to its 15th straight victory over #11 New Paltz 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20 in UVC action on Wednesday evening. The Brewers improve its record to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in conference action while the Hawks fall to 17-8 overall and 3-1 in UVC contests.

The Hawks took the first three points of the opening set as Pat Wing buried a kill and a service ace before Brendan Spulnick added a kill. Vassar drew it even at three following a double block from senior Gavin van Beveren and sophomore Payne Lounsbery. Both teams traded points back and forth throughout the set as a kill from A. Kim put the Brewers ahead 22-21. The Hawks pushed it to set point following kills from AJ Fitzgerald and Wing before Vassar rattled off four straight on an ace from junior Jacob Kim, a block from senior Adam Gulick and freshman Tristan Christofferson and took the first set on a winner from A. Kim.

Vassar earned a quick 4-1 lead in the second set following a kill from Lounsbery along with blocks from Christofferson and Lounsbery and a triple block from Gulick, van Beveren and Lounsbery. Two kills from Wing and an ace from Teddy Teraszkiewicz drew the Hawks even at four until a four-point run from kills from Lounsbery and A. Kim along with a solo block from van Beveren and a service ace from Gulick. New Paltz got within one at 13-12 on an ace from Teraszkiewicz before Vassar regained a five-point advantage on an ace from J. Kim at 21-16. Vassar earned the second set victory following a Hawks attack error.

A double block from van Beveren and J. Kim put Vassar ahead 11-9 in the third set before the Hawks battled back to a 15-13 lead of their own on a winner from Wing. The set drew even at 20 following a NP attack error before John Ronan and Spulinick combined for three kills in the final points of the set for New Paltz as the Hawks took the third set 25-23 to extend the match.

New Paltz tied the fourth set at five apiece following back-to-back kills from Kyle Shaffer. The Brewers answered and took a 10-8 lead on a kill from junior Vaughn Ramsey before the Hawks responded with a Wing kill to tie the set back up at 12. Three straight kills from Ramsey and A. Kim gave the Brewers a 15-12 lead and Vassar extended its lead to 19-15 on another winner from A. Kim. New Paltz trimmed the lead to two on an ace from Evan Kane before A. Kim's kill and an ace regained the five point lead at 22-17. A Hawks service error gave the Brewers a four-set match victory and extended its winning streak to 15 matches.

A. Kim finished with 20 kills and seven digs for Vassar while Ramsey added eight kills. van Beveren tallied seven kills, five blocks and two digs along with Lounsbery recording six kills, three blocks and seven digs. J. Kim added five kills, a match-high 43 assists, two blocks and three digs. Senior Jorge Adames Reyes lifted a team-high nine digs for the Brewers.

Wing buried 19 kills and added six digs for the Hawks while Spulnick tallied nine kills, eight digs, two aces and two blocks. Ronan recorded nine kills and two blocks along with Krish Jain finishing with six kills and two blocks. Shaffer handed out a team-high 39 assists along with three kills and two digs. Dan LaRosa lifted a team-high nine digs for the Hawks.

Vassar will continue its road trip on Saturday afternoon when they head to UVC foe New York University. First serve with the Violets is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
