Zumpano Leads Men's Lacrosse to 15-12 Victory Over Merchant Marine

Junior scores six goals for Vassar in the triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior Ian Zumpano scored six goals to lead the Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team to a 15-12 home win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday evening. The Brewers improve to 7-2 overall while the Mariners fall to 2-4 on the season.

Zumpano opened the scoring up for the Brewers with his first goal of the night just 53 seconds into the game. Carter Hall evened the contest on a feed from Michael Emerick for the Mariners before the two teams traded goals in the next six minutes to see a 3-3 tie at the 6:48 mark. The Brewers scored the final three tallies to end the quarter as senior Riley Olds tallied back-to-back goals on assists from sophomore Shane O'Hara and freshman Nate Johnson before Zumpano scored a man-up goal to close the quarter with a 6-3 advantage.

Zumpano scored his third of the day to start the second quarter from rookie Luke DeRosa before the Mariners cut the lead down to one with two goals from Jack DeTommaso and one from William Badeer with 8:37 to go. The Brewers scored the next three as freshman Baker Morton, senior Troy Santise and Olds each tallied a goal to go up 10-6 at the 3:21 mark. USMMA closed the quarter with goals from Sam Winkler and Hall, both assisted by Jack Collins to cut the lead to 10-8 at the half.

Freshman Liam McGuire and Johnson opened the second half with back-to-back goals to extend their lead to four goals before Owen Barcus and Badeer reduced the lead back to two at the 2:38 mark. Zumpano's fourth goal of the game at the 1:25 mark of the third quarter pushed its lead to 13-10 after three quarters.

Zumpano's fifth tally on an assist from Santise with 7:19 left to go in the fourth gave Vassar a 14-10 lead before two straight goals from Hall trimmed the lead down to two with 2:20 left in the contest. Zumpano's final goal of the night on another assist from Santise clinched the 15-12 victory for the Brewers at home.

Zumpano finished with six goals, three ground balls and one caused turnover while Olds added three goals and Morton finished with two goals and an assist. Santise and Johnson both added a goal and an assist for Vassar. Junior Solomon Hess finished with six ground balls and five caused turnovers while senior Dillon Dierman added three ground balls and one caused turnover. Freshman Dan Bader also tallied three caused turnovers. Senior Jack Bagin earned the victory in goal for the Brewers as he made 12 saves.

Hall led the Mariners in goals with four while Badeer finished with a team-high five points. DeTomasso added two goals and one assist while Collins handed out four assists. Chris Neuman tallied 10 ground balls for the while Josh Plumb picked up five ground balls. Dom Mirack tallied three caused turnovers to lead USMMA. Samuel Stephenson took the loss in goal for the Mariners while making eight saves.

Vassar returns to conference action on Saturday when they play host to #3 RIT at Weinberg Field. Face-off with the Tigers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
