Women's Lacrosse Triumphs 16-9 Over Nazareth in Florida

Johns makes 13 saves in goal for the Brewers

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL - Junior goalkeeper Lauren Johns made 13 saves to lead the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over Nazareth in Florida on Wednesday evening. The win pushes the Brewers to 3-1 overall while the Golden Flyers fall to 2-4 on the season.

Sophomore Kali Ringler posted the opening tally for Vassar before Nazareth scored two straight from Maren Wallace and Emma States to go ahead 2-1 at the 8:02 mark. Senior Annie Uyeki brought the Brewers even with 1:29 left in the opening quarter to make it 2-2 after one.

Ringler scored her second goal of the game before the Golden Flyers tied it at three apiece on a second goal from Wallace with 5:26 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Emma Torkelson found the back of the net on an assist from junior Natalie Daigle along with senior Maddy Kretten scoring with 2:04 left to close the half with a 5-3 advantage.

Vassar scored the first seven goals of the second half as sophomore Reilly Mulcahy and Kretten each scored twice along with a goal each from Torkelson, Ringler and junior Lola Wright. Wallace tallied her third goal of the night before the end of the third quarter as the Brewers held a 12-4 lead.

Daigle and freshman Tess Billings extended the lead to 10 with a goal each in the opening three minutes of the quarter before the Golden Flyers trimmed the lead down to 14-7 on tallies from Annie Rubel, Makenna Misiurewicz and Reva Mussi with 8:12 to go. Kretten and Billings pushed the lead back to nine after goals at the 5:28 and 2:33 marks before the Golden Flyers scored twice in the final two minutes.

Kretten led the way with five points (four goals, one assist) for the Brewers while Ringler scored three goals. Torkelson, Billings and Mulcahy each recorded two goals while Daigle added two points. Sophomore Madison Bouggess had a team-high five ground balls while Kretten added four. Bouggess and junior Riley Kelly each recorded two caused turnovers while rookie Catherine Peacock had a team-high seven draw controls. Johns earned the win in goal with 13 saves and four ground balls while sophomore Bree MacMullen registered a save for Vassar.

Wallace scored four goals for the Golden Flyers while five other players each had a score. Eleanor Matz picked up three ground balls along with Maggie Gannon and Julia Dietz each adding two. Mussi had a team-high five draw controls while Rubel added three. Allie Klestinec took the loss in goal as she made 14 saves and added a game-high seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Brewers return to New York for its Liberty League opener on Friday, March 24th when they head to RIT. The contest with the Tigers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
