Women's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to Western Connecticut State

Kretten records three points for the Brewers

DANBURY, C.T. - Vicky Gracy recorded seven points for Western Connecticut State as the Wolves defeated the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team 16-8 on Wednesday night. The Wolves improve to 2-0 on the season while the Brewers move to 1-1.

The Wolves scored the first three goals of the game as Gracy scored twice and assisted on Colleen Foley's goal to put Western Connecticut up 3-0 at the 8:26 mark. Rookie Emma Torkelson found the back of the net for Vassar on a free position shot before freshman Tess Billings brought the Brewers within one with 6:51 left in the opening period. Foley and Alexa Riggio tallied two goals at the end of the first quarter to give the Wolves a 5-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

Torkelson's second goal of the game came at the 12:24 mark of the second quarter off an assist from junior Natalie Daigle to trim the West Conn lead to two. Foley answered with two straight tallies for the Wolves to push its lead to 7-3 with 9:48 to go in the half. Colleen Crotty fired one in the back of the net to go up by five before senior Maddy Kretten scored off a free position shot to trim the advantage to 8-4 before the halftime break.

The Brewers tallied the first goal of the second half as senior Annie Uyeki scored at the 13:27 mark on a feed from Kretten before Gracy scored her third of the game on a free position along with a tally from Dominique DeMarsico to push the lead to five with 9:45 left in the quarter. Senior Kateri Sanseviro and Kretten scored within a minute of each other to take the West Conn lead down to three again at 10-7. Faye Junge tallied her first goal of the season for the Wolves to give them a 11-7 lead after three quarters.

The Wolves extended its lead to seven following three goals to open the quarter from DeMarsico, Junge and Gracy with 10:28 to go in the fourth quarter. DeMarsico scored her third of the night with three and a half minutes to go before Uyeki tallied the final goal for Vassar with 1:19 remaining.

Kretten tallied a team-high three points with two goals and an assist while Uykei tallied two goals and Torkelson scored twice along with picking up a game-high nine groundballs along with two caused turnovers. Kretten and Sanseviro each recorded two groundballs apiece for the Brewers and freshman Kali Ringler added two caused turnovers. Junior Lola Wright recorded a team-high seven draw controls for the Brewers. Junior Lauren Johns took the loss in goal with one save while sophomore Bree MacMullen made five saves.

Gracy finished with four goals, three assists, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Foley added four goals while DeMarisco had three goals and Junge tallied two goals. Jasmine Pena, Erica Romeo and Meghan Lorenzen each picked up two ground balls along with Romeo adding two caused turnovers. Lorenzen also tallied a game-high eight draw controls for the Wolves. Anna Schipf earned the victory in goal with nine saves.

Vassar will return to action in Panama City Beach, Florida on Monday, March 13th against Eastern Connecticut State at 11:00 a.m.
