Fifth-Ranked Men's Volleyball Sweeps Misericordia, #14 Lasell

A. Kim buries 21 kills in the two victories

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior Andrew Kim tallied 21 kills on the day as the fifth-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team recorded sweeps of Misericordia (25-18, 25-10, 25-21) and #14 Lasell (25-16, 25-18, 25-10) at Kenyon Hall on Saturday. The Brewers improved to 5-1 following the victories while the Cougars fell to 5-10 and the Lasers moved to 4-2.

VC 3 - MIS 0
The Cougars got out to an early 4-1 edge following two kills from Anthony DePalma and a service ace from Joe Kozak. Following a solo block from Jackson Fehnel that gave Misericordia a 8-6 lead, Vassar scored 11 of the next 13 points with freshman Tristan Christofferson and sophomore Billy Fan each registering two kills in the run. The Cougars would get within 24-18 on a Fehnel service ace but a double block from Christofferson and Fan secured the Brewers a 25-18 first set victory.

After a kill from Gannon DeFrain that kept the early VC lead at 4-3, the Brewers rattled off six straight points, including two kills from A. Kim along with a winner from senior Gavin van Beveren. A. Kim registered back to back kills to put Vassar up by nine and then a solo block from van Beveren pushed the Brewers lead to 18-7. Another kill from van Beveren followed by a double block from A. Kim and Christofferson closed out the second set win for Vassar.

Both teams traded points in the early portion of the third set as Misercordia kept the Vassar lead at 9-7 following a double block from Kozak and DeFrain. Junior Vaughn Ramsey responded with two straight kills to put Vassar up four as Christofferson's winner capped a three point run to put the Brewers up 20-14. The Cougars scored five straight points on match points as Benjamin Clendening tallied two blocks along with kills from James Walsh and DePalma to cut it to 24-21. van Beveren buried a kill to secure the three set victory.

A. Kim had a team-high nine kills and added two blocks, seven digs and a service ace. Christofferson tallied eight kills and four blocks while Ramsey added seven kills and six digs. Van Beveren finished with five kills and four blocks while junior Jacob Kim handed out 29 assists and lifted a team-high 11 digs while adding three winners. 

DePalma had a match-high 11 kills for Misericordia and added a block and three digs. Austin Hand chipped in five kills while Clendening tallied three kills and three blocks. Kyle Ganoe handed out 10 assists while DeFrain added nine assists and Fehnel lifted a team-high six digs along with Ganoe.

VC 3 - LAS 0
The Lasers went ahead 7-4 in the opening set on a double block from Jan Baranowski and Theo Zaharewicz before three kills from A. Kim and one from senior Adam Gulick pushed Vassar ahead 8-7. Following a winner from Brenden Joyce to keep the Brewers within one, VC scored six straight points on two kills from Christofferson along with one each from Gulick and Fan. Winners from Fan and Gulick pushed Vassar ahead 21-13 as A. Kim buried back to back kills to take the first set 25-16 victory.

The second set was tied at seven apiece before the Brewers tallied four straight points, including a kill from A. Kim. Jordan Shinaut knocked home a winner to cut the lead to 12-9 but the Brewers went on another run to get to a 19-9 advantage on kills from four different players along with an ace from sophomore Tobias Clark. The Lasers got within 22-16 on a block from Zak Burkett and Baranowski but VC took the second set 25-18 victory on a winner from Gulick.

VC raced out to an early 10-3 lead in the third set as A. Kim recorded two kills along with winners from Fan, Christofferson and van Beveren. Back to back blocks from Christofferson and A. Kim and J. Kim pushed Vassar ahead 13-5 and winners from Gulick and A. Kim extended the lead even further to 19-9. After a kill from Zaharewicz, Vassar scored the final six points with three kills coming from Fan as well as two aces from Gulick to earn its second three set victory of the day.

Gulick and A. Kim each finished with 12 kills to lead Vassar as Gulick added three blocks and two aces while A. Kim added an ace, two blocks and a team-high nine digs. Fan finished with nine winners along with Christofferson adding four kills and four blocks. J. Kim handed out 31 assists and chipped in five digs while senior Jorge Adames Reyes lifted eight digs.

Joyce had a team-high eight kills for the Lasers with Baranowski adding five kills, two blocks and three digs. Shinaut chipped in four winners while Burkett handed out 10 assists and Jesus Garcia had eight assists. Rande Monahan lifted a team-high seven digs along with five digs from David Massa.

Vassar will return to action at home on Friday evening against Randolph-Macon. First serve with the Yellowjackets is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Kenyon Hall.
