Gavin Akoto registered 10 blocks along with senior
Andrew Kim tallying 13 kills and six blocks to lead the second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team to its 12th straight victory over #9 Nazareth 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 on Saturday. The Brewers improve to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in UVC play while the Golden Flyers drop to 14-3 and 0-2 in conference action.
Vassar started the first set with a 4-1 advantage following winners from seniors
Adam Gulick and
Gavin van Beveren and pushed the lead to 7-4 after an ace from junior
Andrew Guaragno. Following a kill from Nazareth's Alex Bertino to draw the Golden Flyers within one, the Brewers scored seven straight points with A. Kim burying two kills, Akoto and A. Kim combining for two blocks and junior
Tobias Clark landing a service ace. Nate Allen's ace cut the Vassar lead to 14-9 but kills from Guaragno and Akoto pushed the lead to 17-10. A kill each from Andrew Bodensteiner and Owen Wickens cut the lead down to 24-19 but a block from Akoto and junior
Jacob Kim sealed the first set victory for Vassar.
The opening points went back and forth as Nazareth took a 6-5 lead in the second set e following a winner from Josh Weaver. The Brewers scored six straight points with Akoto, A. Kim and Gulick combining for four total blocks and Gulick and A. Kim each tallying a kill to go ahead 11-6. A solo block from Max Stuver trimmed the lead down to 15-12 before van Beveren buried a winner and A. Kim and Akoto combined for a block to push the lead to 19-13. Gulick's winner on set point gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
The Golden Flyers went ahead 10-6 in the third set following a kill from Wickens and an ace from Bertino before Vassar responded with four straight points to get it to 11-11 after a kill from van Beveren. Back-to-back kills from Wickens and a block from Stuver regained the lead for Vassar before two kills and a block from van Beveren tied the set at 14. Wickens' kill put the match at 20 apiece before the Brewers scored five straight to close the set with winners from Guaragno and Akoto to earn a three set sweep.
A. Kim tallied 13 kills, six blocks, five digs and four assists for the Brewers while van Beveren buried 11 kills and two blocks. Gulick finished with seven kills and four digs along with Guaragno tallying seven winners and six digs. Akoto tallied his three kills and 10 blocks while junior
Jacob Kim handed out 32 assists along with four blocks and a game-high 10 digs.
Wickens had a game-high 14 kills with two aces and six digs along with Bertino tallying five kills and an ace. Stuver handed out 15 assists for the Golden Flyers and Trent Caviness added 13 assists. Seth Terzo lifted a team-high eight digs for Nazareth.
Vassar will hit the road with matchups next weekend with Misericordia and Elmira. The contest on Friday with the Cougars is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
