Women's Lacrosse Earns Season-Opening Win Over Drew

Kretten tallies eight points for Vassar in the victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior Maddy Kretten tallied five goals and three assists for the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team as they cruised to a 16-6 season-opening victory over Drew on Friday evening. The Brewers move to 1-0 in the early season while the Rangers fall to 0-1.

Vassar opened up the scoring early in the first quarter as junior Natalie Daigle tallied the first goal on an assist from senior Kateri Sanseviro. Senior Annie Uykei scored two goals during the first 15 minutes while Kretten tallied three straight goals for Vassar to take a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter.

After Emma DiPatri scored to open up the second period for Drew, Vassar scored the next five goals with Sanseviro scoring once, Kretten finding the back of the net twice and freshmen Emma Torkelson and Tess Billings scoring their first collegiate goals to go ahead 11-2. Aubrey Welch scored with 12 seconds left in the half for the Rangers as Vassar led 11-3 at halftime.

Lizzy Barrett tallied the first goal of the second half for the Rangers before Sanseviro and Torkelson scored their second goals of the game on assists from Daigle to push its lead to 13-4. In the fourth, Vassar scored three straight goals to go ahead 16-5 as Billings, sophomore Reilly Mulcahy and junior Lola Wright each found the back of the net and sophomore Elizabeth Kendrick recorded an assist.

Kretten finished the night with a game-high eight points along with two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control. Sanseviro tallied five points (two goals and three assists) and Daigle finished with three points. Billings and Wright finished with team-highs in ground balls with three, caused turnovers with three and draw controls with three. Junior Lauren Johns earned the win in goal and made five saves while sophomore Bree MacMullen and freshman Maddie Busam each made a save in net for the Brewers. 

Six different players registered a goal for the Rangers while Barrett led the team in points with two. Ella Champigny, Catherine DiPatri and Anna Horne each picked up three ground balls for Drew while Champigny led the team in draw controls with four. Horne made eight saves in the net for Drew.

The Brewers will return to action on Wednesday, March 1 against Western Connecticut in Danbury. The matchup with the Wolves is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
