Second-Ranked Men's Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to 11

Brewers sweep #6 St. John Fisher for 11th straight victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior Andrew Guaragno buried a team-high 12 kills as the second-ranked Vassar College Men's Volleyball team rattled off its 11th straight win against #6 St. John Fisher 27-25, 25-19, 25-19 at Kenyon Hall on Friday night. The Brewers improve to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in UVC action while the Cardinals fall to 13-4 and 0-1 in conference play.

The first set was back and forth throughout as Vassar took an early 5-2 lead on a kill from senior Gavin van Beveren and an ace from senior Adam Gulick. The Cardinals responded with three straight points as a winner from Matt Beiter tied the set at five apiece. St. John Fisher went ahead 15-13 following two blocks from Gabe La Robardiere and Griffin Stella before an ace from senior Andrew Kim and a kill from freshman Tristan Christofferson put Vassar ahead 18-17. Back-to-back kills from Josh Bigford and Stella put the Cardinals at set point before a Cardinals error followed by an ace from A. Kim and a winner from Guaragno gave Vassar a 27-25 first set victory.

In the second set, a kill from Stella drew the set even at five apiece before three straight points from Vassar, led by two kills from A. Kim, gave the Brewers an early 8-5 lead. Jake Baker's service ace got the Cardinals within one at 14-13 but Vassar was spurred on by two kills from Guaragno and a block from van Beveren and junior Jacob Kim to go ahead 20-15. A block from Christofferson and A. Kim keyed Vassar to a 25-19 second set victory. 

St. John Fisher went ahead 9-6 in the third set after a kill from Stella and a block from Stella and Baker before Vassar scored five straight, led by kills from Gulick and A. Kim. The Cardinals drew to within two points multiple times in the midway points of the set before the Brewers expanded its lead to 18-14 on kills from A. Kim and Christofferson. Guaragno buried the match-sealing kill to take a 25-19 third set victory and complete the match sweep.

Guaragno finisehd with 12 kills and four digs while A. Kim tallied eight kills, three assists, three blocks and nine digs. Gulick and van Beveren each had seven winners while Gulick had two aces and four digs and van Beveren tallied two blocks. J. Kim handed out a match-high 33 assists and lifted five digs along with senior Jorge Adames who added six digs.

Bigford had 12 kills and three digs for the Cardinals while Baker added nine kills, an ace, a block and seven digs. Stella also had nine winners along with three blocks while Evan Ingerick had a team-high 32 assists and four digs. Trace La Robardiere lifted seven digs and had two assists for St. John Fisher.

Vassar will take on #9 Nazareth tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. in Kenyon Hall in UVC matchup.
