POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College Women's Tennis team played its first matches of the spring season at home on Sunday and earned two victories on the day. The Brewers defeated Rochester 8-1 in the first match of the day followed by a 9-0 win over conference foe Bard. Vassar is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
In doubles action against the Yellowjackets, freshman
Erin McCusker and junior
Sofie Shen took a 8-0 victory at the top flight over Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam followed by senior
Tatum Blalock and sophomore
Elyse Duley earning a 8-2 triumph over Jaclyn Dron and Neha Dania at three. Sophomore
Macey Dowd and rookie
Iris Li completed the doubles sweep with a 8-6 victory at two over Rola Abouzenia and Stephanie Kim.
Libby took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Blalock at the top flight of singles while Dowd defeated Karnam 6-2, 6-1 at two. McCusker earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jasmin Toor at three followed by a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dania. Li tallied a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Abouzeina at five and freshman
Ananya Krishnan took the win at six 6-0, 6-0 against Kim.
Vassar began its sweep over Bard with Li and Dowd winning in doubles at one over Nico Gusac and Maya Kelly 8-1. The duo of Blalock and Duley took an 8-0 win over Bella Ries and Paige Houghton at two while freshman
Maya Thompson and Krishnan completed the doubles 3-0 sweep with a win over Lapis Dove and Lexi Sanchez 8-0.Â
Blalock took a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the top singles over Gusac while McCusker defeated Kelly 6-1, 6-1 at two. At three, Shen triumphed 6-0, 6-0 against Dove followed by Krishnan winning at four over Ries 6-0, 6-0. Duley finished a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Houghton at five and Thompson completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at six over Victoria Bagatcholon.
Vassar will head to Franklin and Marshall on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match followed by a matchup with Swarthmore on Sunday morning at 11:00 am.
