POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team took down Haverford 80-52 on Saturday to win the Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament championship as the Brewers improved to 2-0 overall while the Fords fall to 1-1. Senior
Case Parsons was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while first year
Shea Fitzgerald was named to the All-Tournament team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FIRST HALF
- Following a Nicholas Stewart three-pointer for Haverford, the Brewers rattled off nine straight points, including a three-pointer from junior Luke Adams and buckets from first year Avery Lee and Parsons to go ahead 11-3 at the 14:48 mark.
- The Fords got within four on a Stewart jumper and a bucket from Nick Klaiber at 12:18.
- The Brewers expanded their lead to 12 on a three-pointer from Parsons with 7:58 left in the first half.
- Brandon Banadda's jumper at 6:09 reduced the advantage to single digits before Vassar closed the half with five straight points on a three from Lee and a tip-in from junior Alex Walters.
- SECOND HALF
- The Brewers opened the second half on a 12-2 run to push its lead to 23 points on a triple from sophomore Sacha Greenberg.
- Ali Kaan Bek's triple trimmed the Vassar lead to 59-40 with 8:40 to go before the Brewers lead grew back to 26 on buckets from Greenberg, Parsons and Fitzgerald.
- Senior Logan Scott buried a three-pointer off a feed from Parsons with 5:10 remaining to extend the lead to 27 points.
- A jumper from first year Kale Elmhorst gave Vassar its largest lead at 80-50 with 33 seconds left.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Lee finished with a team-high 13 points while Adams tallied 12 points and a team-high five assists.
- Parsons recorded 12 points, three rebounds and two blocks along with Fitzgerald registering nine points, three assists and four rebounds.
- Greenberg tallied nine points and seven boards while sophomore Nathan Denham recorded five points, three assists and two steals.
FOR THE FORDS
- Klaiber led Haverford with a game-high 14 points off the bench while Gaven Marr tallied eight points and six rebounds.
- Banadda finished with four points, three rebounds and two assists along with Kaan Bek recording seven points.
GAME STATS
- Vassar shot 47.1-percent from the field and went 13-27 from three-point distance while the Fords were limited to 32.7-percent overall shooting and made six triples.
- The Brewers held the edge in points off turnovers at 13-6 while also holding the advantage in second chance points at 13-7.
- The points in the paints edge also went to the Brewers at 32-18.
