Vassar Outlasts RIT, Clinches Sixth Seed in Liberty League Championship

Fiske, Fauth connect on game’s only goal

Rochester, NY – Jared Fiske (Livingston, NY) scored the only goal of the game with just under 15 minutes left in regulation to send the Vassar College Men's Soccer team to a 1-0 road win at RIT and in the process clinched the final spot in the upcoming Liberty League Championship
 
Saturday's triumph pushes Vassar to 8-5-4 overall on the season and to 4-3-2 against league rivals , while RIT sees its season come to an end at 4-6-4 overall and 1-6-2 in league play. Vassar will learn its championship fate when the official bracket is announced later Saturday.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar finished a scoreless first half with an 8-4 advantage in overall shots.
  • First half corner kicks also went to the Brewers by a 3-2 margin.
  • Vasilis Ganasoulis (Glen Head, NY) kept the Tigers off the board prior to the break with a pair of saves.
  • The Brewers kept RIT keeper, Jason Trapp, busy in the first half with four stops to keep the game scoreless.
  • The two teams battled without a goal until the Brewers finally broke through with the game winner in the 77th minute.
  • Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) played a pass to Fiske who finished off sixth goal of the year at the 76:52 mark of the contest.
  • Following the goal, the Brewers were held to just a single attempt, and held RIT off the board after getting off three shots, including one on goal that was turned aside by Ganasoulis with 1:12 left to play.
  • RIT doubled up the Brewers in shots after halftime, 8-4.
  • Second half corner kicks went to the Tigers, 2-1.
  • Ganasoulis preserved the shutout with three saves after the break.
 
For The Brewers
  • Fiske moved into a tie for the team lead in goals with his sixth marker of the season and stands tied for second on the team in points with 13.
  • Fauth moved his team lead in assists to nine and points to 21 and in the process moved into a tie for third on the single season helpers list at Vassar.
  • Fauth led the team with four shots, putting two on frame.
  • Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA), Jackson Allen (Chapel Hills, NC) and Fiske all finished with two shots, with Fiske putting both attempts on target.
  • Ganasoulis picked up his fourth shutout in goal with five saves, giving him 39 stops on the year and an even 1.00 goals against average.
 
For The Tigers
  • Trapp finished with five saves in goal for RIT.
  • Jake Donahue, Joshua Price, Gabriel Zaninetti and Tate Pottle all led the team with a pair of shots in the game.
 
Match Statistics
  • Overall shots in the game were even at 12-12 with Vassar holding a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks in the game were also even at four per side.
  • Fouls in the tilt were whistled 14-12 against RIT.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar will be in action on Tuesday in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship at a time and location to be announced.
