Brewers Drop First Round Heartbreaker At Ithaca

Keker nets seventh goal of the season

Ithaca, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team was eliminated from the 2023 Liberty League Championship Tuesday afternoon following a hard fought 2-1 defeat at the hands of third seeded Ithaca. Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) tallied the lone goal for Vassar in the contest.
 
Tuesday's loss sees Vassar fall to 8-6-4 overall on the season, while Ithaca improves to 8-5-3.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar got off to a fast start when Keker got the scoring started in the 13th minute.
  • He gained control of the ball just outside the box and buried a shot under the bar at 12:45 to give the Brewers an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The one goal lead held until the late stages of the first half when Jared Krasnove evened the score at the 38:44 mark of the contest. He finished off an assist from Colin Adams.
  • Vassar responded with two good chances in the closing moments of the half when Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA) hit the right post at 43:44 and Koray Tekin (Winter Park, FL) had a rebound attempt denied by Ithaca keeper, Johannes Berghahn.
  • Ithaca finished the opening 45 minutes with a 5-3 edge in shots.
  • First Half corner kicks went to Vassar, 2-1.
  • Vasilis Ganasoulis (Glen Head, NY) was busy in goal before halftime, making four stops for Vassar in the half.
  • Coming out of halftime, Ganasoulis denied two shots over the first nearly 18 minutes of the half to keep the game knotted at a goal apiece.
  • Vassar forced Berghahn to make a pair of saves in the second half, one off a shot from Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) in the 57th minute and another from Keker in the 70th minute.
  • With the game tied at 1-1, Ithaca found the game winning goal with 3:07 left in regulation time.
  • Ithaca was awarded a free-kick just outside the box when Brandon Lebitsch found Thaib Abidi who deposited what proved to be the game winner while inside the box.
  • The Abidi marker proved to be the last shot of the contest.
  • Ithaca outshot Vassar 7-4 after halftime.
  • Ithaca took four of the seven corner kicks in the second half.
  • Ganasoulis made three more saves for Vassar in the second half.
For The Brewers
  • Keker potted his team leading seventh goal of the season and pushed his season point total to 17, good for second on the squad.
  • Ganasoulis finished with a career-high seven saves for the Brewers and improved his season total to 46.
  • Keker led the team with two shots, with both on target.
  • Fauth and Tekin each finished with a shot on goal.
 
For The Bombers
  • Krasgove potted his third goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.
  • Abidi picked up his second marker of the year, with both goals game winners.
  • Adams recorded his first assist of the season.
  • Lebitsch helped on his second tally of the year.
  • Berghahn earned the win in goal with a trio of saves for Ithaca.

  • Ithaca finished with a 12-7 advantage in overall shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks in the tilt were even at 5-5.
 
What's Next
  • Ithaca advances to the semifinal round of the Liberty League Championship where it will take on second seed Union in Schenectady on Friday.
