Field Hockey Falls In Shootout at New Paltz

Vassar will begin the Liberty League Championship on Tuesday night against Union

NEW PALTZ, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team concluded its regular season slate on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell in a 3-2 shootout against non-conference foe New Paltz on the road. Vassar finishes the regular season at 10-6 overall while the Hawks conclude the regular season slate at 13-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Paltz had an early chance just two minutes in as Hannah Ackerman's shot was saved by senior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq off a penalty corner before the Brewers had a chance off their own corner with senior Molly Zahnleuter's shot being saved by Hawks gaolie Gail Comiskey.
  • Vassar defenders senior Adah Anderson and classmate Kate Neikirk each recorded defensive saves to keep the game scoreless midway through the first period.
  • The Hawks scored a goal with 42 seconds left in the quarter as Morgan Woolley scored off a feed from Rachel Tama to take a 1-0 lead after one.
  • Sophomore Sofia Beseth tied the game at one about two minutes into the second quarter before Tama scored with 11 minutes left on an assist from Amanda Quenneville.
  • Senior Tori Baker and Zahnleuter had strong chances to tie it at two but Comiskey made a save on Baker and Emily McGovern made a defensive save on Zahnleuter.
  • First year Karina Hoffman tallied her fourth goal of the season with four minutes before the end of the half to tie heading into the halftime intermission.
  • The second half finished scoreless with only a couple threats at the goal from both teams, which sent the game into overtime.
  • Zahnleuter had a shot saved in the opening minute of the first overtime before Neikirk registered her second defensive save to keep the Hawks off the board.
  • Each team had a shot knocked away in the second overtime as the two squads headed to a shootout.
  • Angelina Regels made her attempt as the first two Vassar shooters were unsuccessful.
  • Zahnleuter recorded a successful try to make it 1-1 before Queenneville gave the Hawks a 2-1 edge.
  • Neikirk evened it up at two before Ackerman put New Paltz ahead and sent it to a must make opportunity for Vassar.
  • Hoffman's shot just went wide of the net as the Hawks earned the shootout victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Beseth scored her ninth goal of the season while Hoffman tallied her fourth goal of the year.
  • Zahnleuter registered four shots on goal while Neikirk recorded two defensive saves and Anderson added one defensive save.
  • Dumaresq made three saves in 30 minutes of action while first year Grace Wiley made one save in 50 minutes in net.
FOR THE HAWKS
  • Tama recorded a goal and an assist on the day while Woolley scored a goal and Quenneville added an assist.
  • McGovern and Moran each recorded a defensive save.
  • Comiskey earned the win in goal as she made six saves.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will begin the Liberty League Championship on Tuesday evening as the Brewers will host Union in the First Round at Weinberg Field.
  • New Paltz will host Geneseo in the SUNYAC Championship semifinals.
