Field Hockey Advances to the Liberty League Semifinals With 2-1 Victory Over Union

Kovel, O'Connell score the goals to lift the Brewers to First Round victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The fourth-seeded Vassar College Field Hockey team held off a late charge from the fifth-seeded Union Garnet Chargers to advance to the Liberty League Championship Semifinals with a 2-1 victory in the first round on Tuesday evening. The Brewers now advance to take on top-seeded Ithaca on Friday afternoon in the semifinal round.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar took the early lead as sophomore Sydney Kovel knocked home a crossing pass from first year Karina Hoffman with 2:15 left in the opening quarter.
  • The Garnet Chargers threat to tie the game at one just before the end of the half was stopped as Reese Fendelet's shot was saved by senior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq off a penalty corner.
  • Junior Tori Baker had two strong chances in the middle of the third quarter as Union goalkeeper Sophie Brady made two key saves to keep the Garnet Chargers within one.
  • Following a penalty corner with two and a half minutes left in the third, senior Hailey Brigger sent a shot in that was deflected home by classmate Kelsey O'Connell to push the Brewers ahead 2-0 after three quarters.
  • Union made a strong push late as they earned a corner with four minutes to go as Megan Dorsey fired home a shot from the top of the arc following an insert from Maddie Greco to make it 2-1.
  • The Garnet Chargers earned a corner with just under a minute and a half remaining but Dorsey's shot was blocked and the Brewers clinched their spot in the Liberty League Championship Semifinals.
