Vassar Suffers Tight Home Loss To RPI

Brewers close regular season Saturday afternoon

Poughkeepsie, NY  - The Vassar College Women's Soccer team suffered a hard fought 1-0 loss to visiting RPI Wednesday afternoon at Gordon Field. Teresa Zimmer (Long Valley, NJ) continued her strong season in goal with a pair of saves for the Brewers.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Vassar to 8-4-4 overall on the season and to 2-2-4 in Liberty League play, while RPI improves to 8-4-3 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play.
 
Following Wednesday's loss, Vassar drops into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with RPI with both teams earning 10 conference points to date.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar had three early chances on Wednesday, including a header from Ashley Butler (Hopkinton, MA) and a pair of shots from Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) that were turned aside by RPI keeper Megan Wampner.
  • Zimmer made back-to-back saves in the 14th and 15th minutes to keep the Engineers off the board early in the tilt.
  • RPI got the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute when Veronica Martinez de Pinillos took a pass from Bryanna Swinson and tucked a shot inside the right post for the only scoring of the game at 32:10.
  • Vassar would unleash two shots late in the half, including a London Wilkes (Santa Monica, CA) that was denied by Wampner in the 43rd minute.
  • Vassar finished the first half with a slim 5-4 advantage in shots.
  • The Brewers went into the intermission with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Vassar turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting RPI 10-2 after halftime.
  • Wampner finished the half with four saves, including a kick save in the box off a Gigi Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) shot in the 78th minute.
  • Wampner denied Olivia Lavelle (Scottsdale, AZ) with just under four minutes left to pay on the Brewers' final shot of the contest.
  • Vassar finished the second half with the only two corner kicks of the period.
